Lock nuts are hex nuts with a nylon insert. This design minimizes vibration, corrosion, and helps to prevent loosening. The flat side of the lock nut should sit flush with the material once tightened.
Used to connect both metal and wood components
Made from stainless steel for superior corrosion resistance
Q:Can these be used for exterior (fence) purposes? I wonder about the nylon potentially breaking-down. If not, what is recommended?

Answer This Question
A:Â Nylon is a relatively UV stable plastic. I used these to replace corroded cadmium plated steel hardware in decorative aluminum outdoor tables and they are working well. Part of my choice was because I wanted hardware that would remain tight without having to over-tighten them and stress the cast aluminum. If your application allows higher torque you might have other options with standard lock nuts or lock washers.

A:Â Everbilt 1/4 in.-20 Stainless Steel Nylon Lock Nut (3-Pack) is appropriate for exterior purposes. The stainless steel finish outside will be rust resistant and the ring insert is the only part with nylon.

These are very well made and will keep the infrastructure and walls of my greenhouse intact during the windy and snowy season.

Worked well as a lock nut. Used SS to avoid corrossion.
