What drill size is required for the pre-drilled hole?

Having to guess I would surmise the size needed is the same as the top collar o.d. where the hex bit fits to install this insert. mrradiomand
Asked by: mrradiomand
Depends on the material. I ended up using a 3/8" drill bit.

We used them to mount a long fence for a miter saw that we built into a work bench. We mounted the fence horizontally, added long T-bolt slides, made a sliding stop for making repeated cuts, and made it removable with use of these nuts. We inserted them into the top of the work bench and then put bolts through the top of the fence through to these nuts. They hold very secure, the fence does not move at all, and they were easy to insert

I used these in Red Oak board which is very hard. To screw this into the hard wood is quite difficult without splitting the top of the zinc. The wall thickness is just too thin at the top (the right end of the picture). To overcome this, I used a Type D Insert Nut (which has a flange around the top that is much stronger to resist splitting) to pre-thread the wood (the wood was clamped to prevent splitting). Once the hole was threaded, then it was relatively easy to screw this insert to the desired depth below the top surface of the wood. For holding the 1/4-20 screws, they worked just fine.

I have no idea what the zinc is plated on, but it might be cotton candy (unless cotton candy is magnetic... these aren't). I managed to get it in (the hex socket on top ripped out, I had to finish by using a bolt with two nuts jammed onto it to thread it the last third of the way. My mistake was thinking that there was some sort of steel under there, I would have been better off with brass.
