This 1 in. pitless adapter is used to connect submersible well pump discharge pipe to the horizontal pipe entering the house. The adapter comes in 2-pieces that slide together creating a water tight seal. This allows the pump to be removed from the well for service without digging the horizontal run of pipe. This pitless adapter has a brass body with Buna-N O-rings and gaskets and meets federal low lead regulations.

Q:How much clearance in the casing does this leave to allow the pump to pass. I have 4" ID casing and it looks like the pump is 3-7/8" diameter, after this pitless is installed will the pump be able to pass through?

Answer This Question
A:Â The receiver side of the adapter protrudes about 5/8" inside of the pipe. Well casings should be a min. of 6" dia.

A:Â Just to update my previous answer it's closer to 11/16" protrusion

A:Â The pitless adapter is primarily inside the well casing, so the pump does not "pass" the pitless adapter. The point of the pitless adapter is that it goes in and out with the pump at the same time. A "pull pipe" is installed on the top of the pitless adapter. However, your main issue will be installing the pitless adapter in a 4" ID well casing. If this is a new install and you can get the pitless installed prior to burying the casing, it should work. But if the casing is already in the ground, depending how far down you have to reach, it may be difficult to get the adapter in the casing and through the side-cut hole.

Be ready to squeeze this pitless adapter tight against the stand pipe as the extension out the side of the pipe is a bit short resulting in a struggle to get the nut on.

My situation was a bit different than most, I have too much water! When the well was drilled a pitless adaptor was installed with a drain to my pond. Each spring though, the drain can't handle the flow and the water spills out the top of the casing creating a real mess. I installed this pitless adaptor, bushed it down to 3/4 to accept a garden hose coupler. When the seasonal flow starts, I simply take off the hose bib cap, install a length of garden hose and run the overflow into the pond. When things dry out, I put on the bib cap and roll up the hose. very simple and I avoided the need to cut a second trench to run the auxillary drain.
