Questions & Answers

Can 14 screws hold 265 lbs
ByDec 14, 2025
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Hi Home Depot Customer, The shear strength of a single Everbilt #10 x 2-1/2 in. Phillips Flat Head Zinc Plated Wood Screw is approximately 766 lbs at the threaded portion and 1,656 lbs at the unthreaded portion. If 14 of these screws are used, their combined shear strength would be approximately 10,724 lbs (14 screws * 766 lbs/screw) at the threaded portion. This indicates that 14 screws should be able to hold 265 lbs. Keep in mind that shear strength can vary depending on the specific application and surrounding factors.

Answer This Question

Hi Home Depot Customer, The shear strength of the screw, which indicates its weight tolerance, depends on where the load is applied. The shear strength at the threaded portion of the screw is approximately 766 lbs., while at the unthreaded portion, it is approximately 1,656 lbs. It is important to note that shear strength can vary depending on the specific application and surrounding factors.

Answer This Question

Dear Valued Home Depot Customer,We have reached out to the manufacturer and their answer is, Yes, these wood screws are suitable for use with MDF (Medium-density fiberboard) and chipboard. They are specifically designed for woodworking applications and have aggressive threads to securely grip wood. When working with MDF or chipboard, it is recommended to use a pilot hole slightly smaller than the screw's diameter to prevent splitting, as suggested for general wood screw applications.

What type/number of phillips driver bit is recommended? I know it says phillips but I used a PH2 driver and haven't been able to properly fasten a single screw, thanks in advance.

It doesn't matter what screw head because the heads will strip with a brand new #1 or #2 tip. These are the worst screws I ever used in my life 1 out of every 3-4 screw heads stripped. Make sure you have a 3/16 drill bit available to drill out the screws

Generally wood screws are not used with washers.

Yes, they will work for outdoors as they are zinc plated

I would say no. It will rust out as it isn't galvanized.

These wood screws can be used for outdoor. Zinc plating will offer some rust resistance, but not as much as galvanized or stainless steel.

                      The worst of the worst
I bought these to attach a wood board over drywall to studs. I screwed appropriately sized pilot holes for every one, and 4 out of 6 of the screws completely sheared apart towards the end. I had to remove them with the end of hammer. Almost everyone of them also stripped. I've never worked with such brittle screws in my life, it's honestly shocking that this is advertised even for wood, and that they're selling them for 30 cents per screw. Unreal

                        Not a good purchase.
I bought this for a small job. Even with a pilot hole 5 out of 5 screws head striped.

Terrible material, mushy head, strips easily
I bought this for a simple project involving 2x2s and a few pilot holes. The screw heads are mush; my largest Philips head can't keep driving them until the top turns to filings. This has basically ruined some of my materials

Extremely soft metal. Screw strips very easily. Had to use a different brand and it did not strip like this one.

                              Beware- Breaks easily
Size #10 1-3/4" long, zinc, wood screw, Everbilt. Broke in thread area just below shank. Driving with hand screw driver into wall stud for shelving with drilled pilot hole 1/8" dia. After breakage, looked closely at other screws from box and found: rough surface; screws are not straight. See photos. Brittle fracture? Low quality metal? Too small of pilot hole? High friction? See photo. Will return, as poor performance and poor economy. Lesson learned. I'll now buy only high quality fasteners and skip the false econo ones.

                                Break Easily
I had my project done, I just wanted some prettier screws and nothing about this project was heavy duty whatsoever. I figured this would be a 2 minute job of replacing 10 screws. False, half of the screws broke and I had to completely disassemble the work piece to replace these screws. They are absolutely insufficient for any level of work, you will regret buying these screws. The SPAX screws I replaced them with had zero breakage issues and went in a thousand times easier. Do not but these…

This is probably the worst screw on the market. Using a screw driver to tighten the 2 1/2 screw, due to the fact i kept stripping them, it breaks off before about 1/2 in into the piece of beech wood! Highly disappointing and frustrating.

                                    Heads broke off two screws.
Not happy with this product. Had new cabinets put in and two screws were missing on one lower slide out drawer. Simple, just install one screw it will be fine. However, one head broke off rendering that hole useless with one other hole left the second head of the screw broke off rendering that whole useless making a simple job not so simple and time-consuming. not sure if the pot metal had air pockets in it, or if it was just that cheap.

                                      Bad Screws
Bought 2 pks of 8 to screw metal legs to end table top. I predrilled pilot holes for the screws and 3 out of 12 used to secure the legs snapped off below the straight part of shank just before it was seated all the way. When the first happened I thought the screw had stripped the hole but went to remove and half the screw came out and I had no way to remove the threaded part of screw so I was more careful installing the rest but still broke 2 more. Don't buy these screws!

Great screws where you need strength.
I used these screws on a carpentry project (pikler triangle), where one ladder attaches to the triangle. It was a short surface so I needed larger screws and wood glue to make a strong joint. These screws fit the bill. They require a large #3 philips bit to drive. They are zinc-coated so they can be used outdoors.
