Answer This Question

A:  Coarse just means a rough and thicker thread as opposed to a better machine threaded screw. Whatever the case, any 5/16 bolt in the store will work with these nuts.

A:  All Nuts and bolts are sized by diameter, threads per inch (thread pitch if metric) and length. They are either considered coarse or fine. Coarse relates to the number of threads per inch (tpi). To find the correct matching nut and bolt combination you would want the same diameter and tpi. In this case, the 5/16” coarse hex nut (or 5/16”-18) would mate with any coarse bolt (i.e. 5/16”-18 x 2” hex bolt). You would want to make sure the finish is also the same. If this nut were fine thread it would be 5/16”-24. Coarse is typically the standard in most situations.

A:  Scott, There are two basic types of "common" threads you're likely to run into at Home Depot; course and fine. The vast majority of the bolts you'll find on the shelves are course thread. Course vs Narrow has to do with the numbers of "threads" or striations you'll see when you look into the nut or on the shaft of the bolt. Technically, it's a count of TPI (Threads Per Inch). To answer your question, you must match course threaded bolts to course threaded nuts. While it is very likely the bolt you are trying to find replacement nuts for are course-threaded. Fine threaded bolts and nuts are usually found in machinery/tools/light fixtures/etc. While course threaded are found on basically everything else. That said; caveats to those last statement abound, so your best best is to take your bolt/project down to Home Depot and use the bolt gauges (mounted on the sides of the aisle in the Hardware section) to identify the proper nut that you need. Best of luck. -Matt

A:  Nuts come in Fine & Course thread. The difference is the number of threads per inch. Course thread is most common.

I needed to secure two wooden spindles to an antique dresser and these nuts did the trick. I brought the long wooden spindle in and got help from a store rep. He found the hex nuts. 16 cents each. I'm very satisfied!
