What size drill bit do I use for a starter hole?

Drill size depends on the the gauge/material you are fastening into. As a general rule for a screw diameter of #6 fastening into 20-28 gage metal, one would need a drill size between 35-37. - Metal thickness - 28-26 (.0156 to .0188) use 37 drill size - Metal thickness - 24-22 (.0250 to .0313) use 36 drill size - Metal thickness - 20 (.0375) use 35 drill size

What is the stainless steel rating? 410? 316? 8-18?

Stainless is the way to go if you use fastners outdoors and inside. Not that much more exspensive unless you are using hundreds and material it doesn't matter.

Purchased these stainless steel screws to hang up solar lights on my fence at my new home needed at 10 packs over 45 lights were hung up. I wanted stainless steel so they won't rust they worked well and I plan to get 10 more packs to keep at the home for other projects. Home Depot has been my goto store for all my new home projects. anything mounted or hung up outdoors I will only use stainless steel screws

the heads on these are not the greatest. even with light drill pressure, the philips cross start...
the heads on these are not the greatest. even with light drill pressure, the philips cross starts to deteriorate, round off. the threads held ok, but again, the head was the problem
