would these work if my ballast is bad?

I have older (20 year old tube light housing that is currently using a 4 4ft t12 40watt bulbs. Can I use these t12 20 watts as a replacement?
I looked very closely into what type of ballasts I have in my old 4-tube fixture. I had two different but similar models of magnetic ballast supplying 2 bulbs each. Both ballast model numbers were listed in the compatibility guide. They work great.

Will these work with shunted and non-shunted lamp holders?
Thank you for your question, Plug-and-play LED tubes require shunted lamp sockets.
What would cause the lights to start humming? When new they were quiet, now after a couple of hours of short time usage, they have become noisy.

The descriptions states that these DO NOT require a working ballast but when someone asked the question a ?Feit expert? responded that a ?working ballast? was necessary. Which information is correct?Want to replace F40T12 flourescent bulbs.Will these work
It seems that they don't need a working ballast. I just installed these in my garage lights and the ballasts were questionable and the LED tubes turned right on.
