How can this fit copper and gal and pvc when they each have a different outside diameter?

The boot where the two ring clamps are have some expansion capability. It has been a year, but if I remember correctly, used some silicon or plumbers grease to help. Also, if you go to the manufacturer’s website, it notes the connection capability.. Doing the PVC to PVC was much easier. The cast iron side was horrible as I tried to hand sand all the corrosion off. I watched the couplings for several days before covering the whole up. There are other boots at Home Depot, but with only one clamp at each end. I paid extra for the extra clamps and steel center ring. If these didn’t work, I would have returned them to HD and got the single clamps.

Fernco donuts work off of compression, therefore your dimensions need to be very specific and within 1/8" or else the product will fail. Please contact Fernco Customer Service with your specific application details, 800-521-1283.

Yes, I used ABS line. I had to use a press to install it into the insert with a water and soap solution.

I believe another coupling is made for that pipe. Look at Fernco's engineering specifications page to find the correct product.

tips for instlation

Thoroughly clean the interior of the bell into which you are installing this, place the donut inside the bell and be sure it is seated to the shoulder of the donut, measure from bottom of shoulder to bottom of inside of donut and transfer this measurement to a mark on your PVC pipe, grease inside of donut with appropriate lube, bevel the end of your PVC to a gradual end, about a 30 degree angle but not a long bevel, generously lube the end at bevel with appropriate grease, place beveled end of pipe into previously installed donut and force into same until you feel it hit bottom and previously marked point is approximately even with shoulder of donut. If you have difficulty getting the PVC to seat properly a bar for prying or a sledge hammer for striking may be used on the end of the PVC pipe with a block of wood over that end to protect it. I believe if you search on Youtube they will have a clip of this procedure. Hope this helps someone.

Do you have the West Coast version of this coupling? Fernco says their part number is 1002-66WC. The big end diameter is 8.0 inches.

different sizes
Fernco does make a smaller size- AC418-305 that will fit with about a 4.75in diameter hub. There is also a largest size P44UX-305 that will fit to a 5in diameter cast iron drain hub. Try measuring the hub with a string maybe to get an accurate measurement. The great folks at Fernco were a great help. It would be nice if maybe Home Depot could just order the different sizes.

A 100 Year old Cast Pipe. burst. A pvc replacement was in order to make a repair. Using this compression coupling I was able to add a pvc pipe directly into a cast fitting. The only caution is handle the cast with exceptional care to avoid cracking. Clean well, and when assembling make sure the pvc is seated through the coupling. I added no sealers to the new joint.

If you are trying to couple ABS to Cast iron and you can join it at a bell in the cast iron this is the only way to go. Makes for a very clean and tidy connection! I would recommend it to anyone doing this kind of plumbing project. I have used these couplers a few times always easy to use and the finished job is perfect.
