No, this coupling is pipe specific to the pipe size and types on the label.

Can these be used underground?

Yes. After connecting make sure you have support under both pipes before covering in the form of gravel.

It should connect.

can this be used outside? whats the max psi it can handle?

Couplings are stainless steel and rubber so yes they can be used outside, as far as pressure it is the same as PVC pressures. These are made to tie piping together with the added benefit of the rubber allowing some flexibility.

You have to choose the right coupling for the two specific pipes you're trying to join. If you are joining two dissimilar pipes (with different O.D's), the two ends of the coupling have different I.D.'s. Each end of rubber coupling should fit snugly onto the end of each pipe without stretching. The O.D. of the rubber coupling must remain the same so the metal shield can evenly clamp and properly seal the coupling onto both pipes. Deburr the ends of the two pipes you're joining inside and out. Clean the outside of any metal pipe with medium or coarse steel wool so the rubber coupling gets a good grip and seal. If you are working in a tight spot, slide the coupling onto the end of the pipe with the smallest O.D. (Outside Diameter) and slide the metal shield off the rubber coupling back onto the pipe so it's out of the way. Roll the other (thinner) end of the rubber coupling back so you can fit the larager O.D. pipe into place and then roll it back into place over the pipe and slide the metal shield over the coupling and alternately tighten both clamps evenly -don't overtighten them, only 5 lb-ft. (snug by hand with a short wrench).

Hi wK, The I.D. of either pipe is irrelevant as the coupling fits over the O.D. of both pipes. The O.D. of the coupling is the same so the metal shield clamps down and seals the coupling against the ends of two pipes of different O.D.s, so each end of the coupling has a different I.D. Clear as mud? You have to make sure you choose the right coupling to mate your two specific pipes, or it won't seal properly.

I only used it temporarily as a coupling between 1-1/2" PVC and 1-1/2" Copper Pipe until I could replace all the copper with PVC to the tub drains. It worked well and didn't leak on a horizontal section of pipe. The ends of the copper were cut with my sawzall so they were not perfect.

I used this product to connect a 2 inch rubber discharge hose to a pump sump to lower the water levels in my swimming pool. It works far better than connecting that hose to a standard piece of slippery PVC pipe and this wider clamp did not cut into the rubber discharge hose as the single band clamps tend to two, plus you have to buy two of them and one of these. Nicely made product.
