The details page indicates it needs 40amps while the specification pdf for cooktop says 30.8. Which is correct?

Note to consumers. GE's marketing material rates the elements of this cooktop in peak power, not RMS power. The U/L lab rating is in RMS power, which is what your utility company uses, and what your circuit breakers use, and represents "effective" power which is used by installers to size the circuit. A 100W light bulb uses 100 RMS watts, as a point of reference. To convert between the two, multiply by "the square root of two" to get from RMS to Peak, and divide by "the square root of two" to get from Peak to RMS. Given all of this, the true element RMS power of this device (from a utility load perspective) is as follows: Element 1: 3700W peak = 2600W RMS Element 2: 2500W peak = 1800W RMS Element 3: 1800W peak = 1300W RMS Element 4: 2500W peak = 1800W RMS The RMS (root-mean-square) power is the "effective" power, in terms of load on your power panel (based on equivalent DC power). It is very important to know whether your product's marketing specs are in RMS or Peak when comparing products. It is easy to tell which is used by looking at the U/L lab results. In this case, the U/L rated the total power consumption at ~7.3KW based on their lab measurements. If you add up the advertised power of each element of this cooktop, it comes out to 10.5KW (which requires 44 amps at 240V, too much for a 40 amp circuit). The difference between the U/L lab finding and the GE marketing material just happens to be the square root of two (plus rounding error). The proves the GE marketing ratings of these elements is in peak, not real "effective" RMS power. Keep this in mind when comparing cook-tops. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_mean_square

Can cast iron cookware be used on this stove?

i know its a ferrous metal and should work. but would it put too much inductance on the coils and fry anything?
Asked by: TheGeckster
Yes anything that a magnet sticks to. True induction cookware probably induces more efficiently than cast iron. Anyway no fear of frying anything but your eggs.

Is there a lock button--to avoid accidental turn on?

Asked by: Quinn
Yup and I like it. Mostly handy for cleaning the cooktop.
