Can I conect whole house to the generator by using this switch? What else is needed?

You could, but I don't recommend it. This is a single breaker, 30 amp unit. It is more designed for hooking up a high amperage single unit such as a well pump, or a small water furnace, or a small air conditioner. You really couldn't run an entire house on 30 amps. To be realistic, you should buy a 50 amp, 6 to 10 circuit transfer switch that allows you to wire whatever you want running while on a generator. Even still, you won't be running air conditioning, electric water heater, and microwaves simultaneously. That's just too much amp draw. These are designed for temporary usage of generators. If you really need a full house backup system you should start looking for permanently based home generator systems. Those are pricey. So, in summary, yes, you could hook the entire house up to this one single circuit. But you'll be spending a lot of time resetting the breaker. Hope this helps.

Rated for outside. Not inside.

does this switch have a 100a main

Asked by BenH August 9, 2015

Answer

As you have alluded, this particular transfer switch features a 30 amp 2-pole breaker. As the unit is rated for 30 amps, a 100 amp main breaker would exceed the unit's 30 amp rating; a 100 amp breaker is not included on this model. This transfer switch is good for a single circuit which draws a lot of amps like a well pump or a eOne Sewer grinder. IE: double pole 30 amp circuit. I installed this switch myself as the homeowner and it was more involved than I anticipated, but was well within my scope of ability. Challenges: 1. It's barely prewired-Wires are only 6" long and require you to purchase all additional wiring separate vs. other brand transfer switches which come already prewired. 10 gauge needed. 2. All screw nuts from the factory holding the prewiring in place were loose. Make sure to double check the pre wiring nuts. 3. No electrical whip included. Overall, it works as designed however a prewired unit would have been much easier to work with. The instructions included are clear and easy to follow.

Product is solid and well built. The slide switch to ensure you are only on the generator or on the source line is plastic but is fairly thick. The instructions are simple and fairly clear. It's a little hard to get the front panel off and back onto the hinge like pins at the top of the metal box and as it turned out was one of the hardest parts of the project.
