I need a light bulb for my garage door opener. Can't I just use a 60 watt bulb like I use in the house? Is there a more heavy duty one?
Asked by: Ann
Yes, you can, though 60W incandescent bulbs aren't sold anymore. Your choices then are LED, CFL and halogen. If you're in a cold climate, CFL bulbs take a while to fully brighten. LED bulbs appear brighter than their rating would imply. Halogen bulbs are still energy hogs, but for the amount of time they're on in an opener it hardly matters. The claim of the Genie bulbs is that they produce less electrical interference than some other LED bulbs. Most decent LED bulbs don't interfere, but some older and/or cheaper ones do.

Dear Genie, I have an older model "1/2 Horsepower Screw Driver" unit. It has a red case and uses dip switches. I can't find a model no anywhere. My relay is not shutting my lights off. I have cfl's in there now. I read on the interwebs that these bulbs can cause problems with the relay timer shutting off my lights. If I tap on the relay the lights shut off. Anyhow, my options are try to find a replacement relay or try these bulbs? I don't want to spend $20 if this ain't the problem. Thanks. Love, Taylor
Asked by: Taylor
Your question will not be seen by Genie. CFLs are more likely to produce interference than LED bulbs. I would suggest swapping in one inexpensive LED bulb and see if it makes a difference. I'm skeptical that the Genie bulbs will solve your specific problem, which is more likely to be a failure in the opener's electronics.

my remotes only work twenty feet from door. any ideas
Asked by: Corky
Your opener is susceptible to the RFI generated by the bulb. Genie has added extra filtering to prevent this but your opener is still being affected. You can try other LED bulbs but may still experience this issue. I would suggest trying a compact fluorescent rated for garage (extreme temps from a bulb's perspective) or switch back to standard incandescent. If allowed in your area you may be able to use a socket to plug adapter and mount a LED light farther away from the opener.
