Questions & Answers

what is nailing pattern and coverage area of box

what is nailing pattern and coverage area of box
Asked by: airboss
Appears to be some time since this question was posted, but my understanding and practice has been that the furring nails must be driven into the wall framing members (ie., studs -- not simply into the sheathing) at a spacing of 6" max. o.c. Therefore, the total coverage will depend on the spacing of your framing (16" o.c. or 24" o.c.). If your wall framing is at 16", and your nails are placed at 6" along each stud, you'd use 27 nails for every 16 SF of wall, or 1.6875 nails/SF. Therefore a box of 400 nails should cover about 235 SF of wall area, framed at 16" centers. Recommend you verify this with your local Building Code Official, as requirements may vary from place to place.
