A: 1-1/2 is good for a go over. At least 4 nails per shingle 63 shingles cover a square That would be 252 nails per square.
A: I would use at least 1 3/4 inch as for how many you need would be about 140-150. But remember if you are putting a new layer over the old some manufacturers won't warranty the new shingles and if they do it's usually at a reduced life.
