what length do I need for a roof over and how many nails does a square

I would use at least 1 3/4 inch as for how many you need would be about 140-150. But remember if you are putting a new layer over the old some manufacturers won't warranty the new shingles and if they do it's usually at a reduced life.

Can you estimate how many nails would come in the 1 lb. pack please?

Roofing Nails
Great nails that did the job the way they were designed - these easily drove through several layers of shingle and into the sheathing beneath - they've held great with no issues
