Q:do I need a flange fitting to connect the termination to a shutoff valve

    Answer This Question

A:  Hi, kmmouse - If we understand your question correctly, we'd recommend use of a 1/2" termination flange in place of this male adapter. One may install a shutoff valve directly on the termination flange and an appliance connector from the termination flange to the appliance. Please check out our CSST Design & Installation Manual at homeflex.com/resources. If any other questions, please call (661) 257-3923 M-F 8a-5p. Dave (x1026); Jon (x1010). Thanks.

      Answer This Question

A:  Hi, Billy - Pipe compound or yellow Teflon tape should be used only on the IPS threads. Not on the brass-to-brass threads of the fitting. Check out our CSST Design & Installation Manual available at homeflex.com/resources. Thanks.

      by|Dec 7, 2022

A:  You do not need to apply pipe dope or tape to brass connections, however, I have had small leaks with these pieces i the past and a little dope took care of it.

              Nothing but Leaks
Alpha Flex (now called Home Flex) is a horrible system. The pipe is good, but the connection system was not well thought out. There is only one non-metallic washer that seals against the stainless steel pipe. Out of the six connections I made, I could only get one to seal so no bubbles appeared when performing the leak test. I cut off several connections and tried again. When I disassembled the connections, everything looked smooth, but yet they still leaked. A couple connections were obviously deformed. When tightening the connections, the pipe folds back on itself and is supposed to create a smooth seal against the washer. I can appreciate the ingenuity of the system, but in four words: IT DOES NOT WORK! I could not tighten the connections enough to stop the leaks. I purchased Pro-Flex connectors from Lowe's and they are much better and easier to use. They come with a thick silicone washer to seal to the connector. I made an airtight connection on the first try. You also don't have to tighten the connections as much, just hand tight and then another 0.25-0.50 turn more.

Installed it about 2 weeks ago and haven’t had any leaks yet. The key was to not let the pipe spin at all when tightening the nut. If you let the csst spin, it will shred the gasket and leak.
