We're sorry you had an unfortunate experience. It's good that you conducted a leak test prior to burial. Some installers elect to complete the assembly of the system above ground, leak test, and lower it into the trench. Not only is it easier, but the work area remains cleaner. Dirt or sand can inhibit a good seal. It's also easier to check for leaks. it's a simple process of installing a pressure gauge and pumping it up to 15 psi with an air pump and holding it for 30 minutes. If the risers are not yet connected to their appliance, be sure to use a good threaded cap as the plastic cap on them is for protecting the threads during shipping and will not seal in a pressure check. While the system is under pressure, one can use a soapy solution on all the joints (including the gauge) to check for bubbles while the gauge continues to indicate pressure. In that our pipe should not be chamfered and our fittings may be loosened and adjusted, any slight leaks can be addressed. Upon a successful test (and permit inspection), conduct one final pressure check to ensure nothing came loose while you placed it in the trench, lay in the tracer wire, back fill the trench to about 6-8" below grade, lay down the caution tape, and finish the burial.
