Has anyone purchased this recently? The bad reviews talk about the crank being plastic, is this still an issue or has it been upgraded? $300 is a lot to spend for an umbrella that may only last a year.

The crank handle is not the problem. it is the crank mechanism that the handle attaches to. mine is 2 years old and it broke. Hampton Bay told me that you have to purchase the umbrella assemble for $250.00 but a new complete umbrella is $299.00. I deal with parts on fire trucks and equipment and I took this part out and it is separate from the umbrella assembly but they will not sell me one so this umbrella is useless to me now. Do not buy one.

do you have to stand behind this umbrella to open it up? I want to put it in the corner of my upper deck facing in to the center of the deck so the base would be in the corner and I would not be able to get behind it to open it.

How to fill base

I bought an umbrella at a garage Sa Le and I don't know how to fill the base

You remove the top plastic cover off of the base stand. Inside you’ll find two thick, what seams, leather bags. You fill them both with playsand. It took five 50lbs sanbags to fill mine completely.

Will it fade

Ours did fade here and there, but we did not store it properly. It was left outside all summer and winter in CA. However, be aware that getting a replacement canopy is not easy or economical! The replacement canopy is literally the same price as the entire umbrella assembly, which I don't understand.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from love this umbrella This umbrella is wonderful. I attached it directly to my deck instead of using the huge weighted base that eats up so much footprint. My big gripe at this point is why the heck is there no cover for this expensive product that will cover the entire mechanism? The cover should encompass both the umbrella AND the extension as well as the base post and secure for bad weather.

Stitching tore on the umbrella, will try to fix, but not confident. While it worked it was great, but Hampton Bay is basically only good for a season, if you want something to last more than 1 summer, try another brand. The thread used for stitching the umbrella was too fine, which would have been fine if they had used enough stitches, but they made 6 stitches to hold an umbrella together. I will try an reinforce with something a bit tougher. This is probably a great umbrella for indoor, but who needs an umbrella indoors. The construction was too poor to handle the wind, and the umbrella has to be taken down in even a 10mph breeze.

I was hoping you came in to cover because I had to buy one not a hard time figuring it out. I think these are pointers you should pass on to customers where they can buy the covers and what kind and size. Otherwise I’m sure I will enjoy the umbrella ☔️ The price was right and I thank you for that.

Just about an hour. Though instead of filling the bags with sand, I would suggest buying 4 50-60 pound bags of sand and just fitting them in place. Has worked very well for me.
