Questions & Answers

1Question
caret
Q:It is approximately 60' from my main entrance to my garage 100 amp entrance. The feed to the entrance has frayed where the prior owner ran it under a door sill, only about 5' from the entrance panel. I can't run a new cable without remodeling my finished basement. How do I splice the cable and maintain the consistency of the 100 amps?

Answer This Question

A:  Hi Mike, Well for starters, this wing nut that you asking he question about only will connect wires up to #10 AWG, and your 100 amp service is most likely #2 service entrance. For any wire connections, especially one of this size, it will need to be first housed in a junction box with a cover. This is not just to be code compliant, but also to keep you safe. I'd recommend to use a splicer connector, and then make sure it is covered with electrical tape. The splicer is shown below in the link: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Blackburn-1-1-2-in-x-39-64-in-Type-ASR-Splicer-Reducers-with-Solid-Barrier-Wire-Stops-2-Pack-ASR1114-B2-10/100126602 No matter what connector you choose, it is imperative you first place the wires in a junction box for safe housing. A:  You got good advice from Joseph. However if the cable got frayed in the first place, code was already violated when it was run in such a shallow fashion that it could get frayed at all. If it were my house, I'd back track to where the cable exits the house and set a junction box there. From there I would run new feeder cable dug to the proper depth and without further breaks all the way to the breaker panel. He's also right about this being an inappropriate method of splicing your feeder cable. Normally for this size wire one would use a split-bolt connector, or a butt-splice connector and a hydraulic crimping tool. Then there's wrapping the connection with rubber tape followed by electrical tape. Unless you have worked in the electrical field, this isn't something a DIY homeowner should tackle without a trained professional at least looking over his shoulder, if not actually performing the work. Good luck. :-)

I only use ideal wine nuts for my connections. They are a little expensive butt the quality is almost as good as they used to be 10 years ago.
