Answer This Question

A:  Yes, our Patio Plus is well-suited to growing the fruit trees you listed. We recommend applying some of our Fruit Tree fertilizer at the time of planting and then again prior to fruit emergence.

        Answer This Question

A:  For stuff that matters I go down to Grangettoe's and ask Donna. For years she has steered me straight. I just ask for the best potting soil they have, pony up the price, and celebrate the success of whichever important plant my wife thinks deserves kid-glove treatment. The Kellogg stuff really isn't potting soil, but works very for general like building basins; throwing on the bank to hold soil, and bulk soil for large garden boxes.

        by|Aug 21, 2022

A:  Patio Plus Outdoor Potting Mix will work fine. We recommend adding an all purpose fertilizer to provide a slow-release of nutrients to help support the reduction in transplant shock.

A:  We do not sterilize any of our organic soil mixes in order to preserve the beneficial soil microbes in the soil. The soil mixes have been composted to temperatures above 130 degrees for several weeks. This process eliminates any potential for pests and pathogens.

This is by far the worst potting soil I have ever purchased and I will never buy it again. It was full of all kinds of trash Including a ballpoint pen Spend the extra money and buy Miracle grow potting soil.

I first learned about Kellogg products when working as a Grounds keeper for the City of Santa Monica. We used many of Kelloggs products exclusively so I had no reservations buying their patio mix for my personal use. It is a quality product that drains well in the container I used, yet it retains moisture extremely well. I used it to plant a Grandiflora bare root rose almost 3 weeks ago and my rose already has substantial new growth.

Patio plus is my favorite. Has a lot of pumice which my succulents love. I prefer the cactus and succulent mixture but HD has been out of it.

Buyer beware - quality control issue?
All 5 bags purchased, I found bits of plastic, rubber, painted wood (blue color), and pebbles. It was a small amount (about a handful per bag) but they are non-organic materials. I when I started screening the soil (like screening compost) to remove mulch-sized pieces. Also each bag had appox 2-3 gallons of large pieces of wood chips and what appears to be hard nuts, which my understanding is better ti use as mulch vs potting mix

Not sure what's going on with this soil
I've used this soil years ago and had no problems with it. However, this time around my Tiny Tim tomato seedlings that sprouted directly in this soil aren't doing well. The growth is extremely slow. Ever since the seedlings sprouted 2 weeks ago, there has been VERY little growth. The seedlings are maybe 3/4th of an inch and the true leaves aren't growing much at all. The seedlings are now starting to yellow up. I have them in party cups with plenty of draining holes. I water every 2 days as they are on my window sill and get enough sun but not too much. It just seems like there is zero nutrients in this soil and my seedlings have used up their reserve and need additional NPK. I would think even with low level of nutrients in this soil, it would at least be able to feed seedlings for 2-3 weeks. Maybe I got a bad bag?

Response from Kellogg Garden ExpertJun 28, 2020
Thank you for your feedback. You are correct - there should be a nutrient charge that will provide enough nutrients for the first several weeks after planting. We like to recommend adding an organic granular fertilizer at the time of planting, since the hole is dug and ready for the plant - adding fertilizer at that time is one way to eliminate the need to fertilize a few weeks later. Re-application can occur every 5-6 weeks through the season. This should provide a nice slow-release of nutrients. Supplementing with a liquid fertilizer like Fish & Kelp will provide the plant-available nutrients for a quick boost. Used in combination with the organic granular fertilizer will provide the best results. We will have someone contact you to learn more about your experience. KelloggGardenProducts
