Q:Kellog potting mix: I saw a comment from a user regarding fungus gnats. Can this mix be heated in the oven before use as recommended by some online forums to kill the fungus gnat eggs. What else is recommended to get rid of fungus gnats.

Answer This Question

A:  The best control method for fungus gnats is to regulate how frequently you water your pots. Fungus gnat larvae live in the top 0.5" of soil and are dependent on moist soil in order to develop. If you allow the top 0.5"-1" of the soil to dry out before watering again, then you can prevent new fungus gnats from emerging. This has the added benefit of allowing for better aeration of your soil, which your plant's roots will appreciate.

Q:Is this safe to use as a substrate for growing aquatic plants in aquariums? Thank you!

          Answer This Question

A:  Our products are not formulated for use in aquarium tanks. You'd be better off using a thin layer of a low-nutrient compost covered by aquarium gravel. I hope this helps, and there are a ton of great resources online for planted tanks that you can look into for more information.

The potting soil seems to be off. It has small flys coming from the planter and it seems to have a mold condition. I would not recommend this product.
