We would like to install carbon monoxide alarms in our home, we are having our oil fired boiler converted to a natural gas fired boiler, and I was reading that carbon monoxide alarms should be placed at least 15' for any gas appliance, our problem is that there is no place in the basement where the boiler is located to maintain at least 15' from the boiler, the place that would give us the most distance is about 14' diagonally from the front of the boiler, but it would be about 13" from the edge of one of the basement windows, and about 3' from one of the other basement windows edge, the windows are the old metal frame windows that have not been opened in more than 30 years, there is also a refrigerator between the 2 windows mentioned above, all dimensions are from the center of the carbon monoxide alarm, the distance from the alarm to the side of the refrigerator would be about 18", I am afraid that the above mentioned would create a dead space rendering the alarm inactive, the location mentioned above would be on an outside wall of the basement, what do you suggest?
Asked by: Cappy
In the description for one of the CO monitors, it says to place it close to the floor since CO is heavier than air and thus would be less likely to detect its presence if placed higher up on a wall. The higher up from the floor it's placed and the amount of fresh air circulation available are also considerations. The greater the leak and length of time the leak has been occurring will change the amount / accumulation of the gas and the oxygen in the area. As it continues to rise, oxygen will be depleted and the greater the possibility of fire / explosion happening will increase should the least little spark occur. A good suggestion about the batteries would be to replace them at the same time batteries for smoke detectors are changed, every six months.

Many homes lack these which are at least as important as smoke or fire detectors. Smoke detectors will not provide protection from CO2, also known as the silent killer. Every fall and winter, many Americans die from CO2 due to faulty furnace ventilation and other heating devices. CO2 detectors can pick up low levels of CO2 accumulating in your home and alert you to get to fresh air. I've been using these at least 20 years and replace them about every 5 years as they lose efficacy over time. I bought the 2 pack because I install one near the bedrooms and another in the living area. Every home should have them and homes that use any kind of gas appliances are more prone to potential killer gases. Many have smoke detectors but not CO detectors. Consider this. You can usually see and smell smoke. You will never see or smell CO2 and it can kill you just as fast as smoke. Please, everyone, spend that small amount on the cheap insurance and protect your family against this silent killer.

All 4 units appear functional via testing with the "Test" button. Purchased these because they have a readout rather than just "alarm" or "no alarm" status, or a series of cryptic beeps, which is what my annoying old units did. They supposedly have a 10-yr lifetime; I hope they last. Note that the units are around 2 inches thick, which isn't apparent in the photos. Not a problem, just something to consider for placement.

The price was very good and these detectors are perfect to replace the old ones that expired. We only had to make a small adjustment on the old mounting and it was easy to set up. 10 year warranty should last us for a good while knowing we have a monitor on carbon monoxide levels.
