Q:My alarm is beeping. I pushed test button and it stopped. What foes that mean?
by|Mar 16, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Hello. Was it beeping every 60 seconds? Then that is a low battery alert. Pressing the test button activated the low battery HUSH. The Low Battery HUSH® feature allows you to press the button on the alarm and disable the chirp” for a random period of up to 12 hours. This gives you a chance to replace the battery at a more convenient time by disconnecting the alarm from power. During this Low Battery HUSH® period, your alarm is monitoring for CO. If the alarm was chirping every 30 seconds, then that was a sensor error that was reset when the alarm was tested. If it occurs again, please call us with the alarm in hand at 1-800-880-6788. If the alarm was giving 4 quick beeps, a pause, 4 quick beeps, a pause, then that was the alert that the alarm had detected carbon monoxide. Never ignore a CO alarm. A true alarm is an indication of potentially dangerous levels of CO. CO alarms are designed to alert you to the presence of CO before an emergency – before most people would experience symptoms of CO poisoning, giving you time to resolve the problem calmly. If you suspect CO poisoning, move outside to fresh air and get emergency help. Your first line of defense is an annual inspection and regular maintenance of your appliances. When your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, perform the following steps: On the alarm, press the TEST/RESET button. Call emergency services; either 9-1-1 or your local fire department. Immediately move to fresh air; either outside or near an open door or window. Ensure that everyone in the structure has been accounted for. Do not enter the premises and move away from an open door or window until emergency services have arrived, the structure has been aired out, and the alarm has returned to its normal condition. If after following these steps the alarm still reactivates within a 24-hour period, repeat the steps and call a qualified appliance technician to investigate the structure for sources of carbon monoxide, and verify that the alarm system is functioning properly. Any problems should be immediately corrected.

Q:This posting needs to be corrected. The product info states that an “85db alarm will sound to alert of fire” but this isn’t a smoke detector. Misleading information such as this could lead to the death of a less aware consumer.

Kidde Firex Carbon Monoxide Detector replacement. The old one was just that, old. It started chirping one day and I pressed the "Hush" button. I replaced the batteries with new ones, but a few days later, it started chirping again. I went to the Kidde website for more information. The detectors do have an expiration and mine had reached it's life limit. I had not dated the old unit but feel sure it was over the ten years it was built to last. I marked the new unit before I installed it and each year when I replace the batteries, now I will know when to replace the unit. The unit comes with batteries, installation instructions, and mounting screws and spacers. Good value for home safety.

Appears to be a great value. I can't say how good it works yet because you can't smell or see carbon monoxide. If I'm still alive in 10 years it's either because it worked or I haven't had a carbon monoxide leak in my house. I did buy 2 of them because I wanted something to protect my family and I don't have a lot of money. I also bought 6 smoke detectors because out of every place I checked Home Depot had the best price easily. I think that they might be doing this on purpose to help keep people safe. Thank you Home Depot.

Unit works as required by city ordinance but the batteries outlasted the CO sensor inside. The projected life is 7 years but all of mine failed in about 6 years. The new ones are good for 10 years. Wonder why the manufacturer doesn't supply a plug-in CO sensor instead of making you throw the entire unit out, Could be expensive and labor intensive if you have many apts.

Response from Kidde ExpertJun 4, 2019
Hello. The price of the sensor is a large portion of the cost of the alarm itself. Making the sensor reliably replaceable would increase the cost of the alarm and the replaceable sensor might cost almost as much as a new alarm.

We purchased two of these detectors. We have a new house that has interconnected smoke detectors, but when I read about them it did not say they detected carbon monoxide. We have an attached garage, a gas fireplace and a gas furnace. Carbon monoxide could come from any of these. We would rather be safe than sorry. This detector is relatively inexpensive and easy to install. I would recommend it to anyone.

Easy to install. My previous Kidde CO alarm expired exactly 7 years to the manufacturing date. It's nice that the newer version comes with batteries and less for 10 years now.
