The thermal capability is decent, it seems to focus pretty tight at close ranges. I was disappointed with the voltage part of the item. For one it doesn’t tell me the voltage and that is my fault for reading too much into it. But also it’s identification of presence of voltage is spotty and I got this for the ability to trust a quick read and know the leg is dead. This product didn’t meet my full expectations on that rate at all.

Why?!?! Why!?!? KLEIN PLEASE PROVIDE AN ANSWER!!!
I bought this due to its versatility. It's had a rough life with some bandaids at 3 years old but still functions fine. My only complaint, but a huge drawback..the tip of the tester meant to insert into an outlet to test for voltage is TOO SHORT!?!? Every other NVCT at the tip has a strip of metal that extends out far enough to slip into the hot side of an outlet and read voltage. This one does not. Why!?!? What was the reason for the 1/8-inch tip snip on the laser thermometer NCVT? This makes no sense to me. Every other NCVT is plenty long. All but this one. Please Klein why?

            Battery Cap Failure
I've had mine for several years and it's always worked. I took it out of the drawer and observed that the batteries had slipped out. Upon inspection, I observed that the battery cap had failed and was now just a threaded cylinder on the end of the unit. I was looking for a replacement cap, and figured I would get a couple of spares, but I haven't found out where I can find them. Maybe Crazy Glue to bond it back together? Interesting that two other reviewers (out of nine) had indicated their caps had failed--one of them in exactly the same manner, but his was after a drop. Sounds more like plastic is breaking down due to oxidation or something else. Maybe a tougher plastic cap would work better than the the current one, eh?

Battery cap broke under 1 year.
The unit worked fine until the battery cap broke. It didn't even last 1 year. No replacement caps are sold from Klein. Try a different brand if you need a NCVT.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Amazing , practical and very handy tool, helps a lot if you are in the Electrical and hvac field. And very affordable prices . Klein Tools NCVT-4IR combines two useful functions, a non-contact electrical tester and an IR thermometer. Dust and water Resistant. Bought it a few years ago and have no issues.

I bought this tester for work back in December 2018. I really liked this tester for being able to do 2 things instead of the usual 1. I don't like to have to carry any more tools than I have to on my job. However, it is not as rugged as you would expect Klein tools to be. It fell out of my cargo pants pocket down by my knee and the top of the cap that holds the batteries in broke right off. Of course, the little metal piece that connects to the battery got lost. I would really like to give this tool a better rating, which I will happy to do, if I can get the cap replaced promptly.

A well-designed and constructed multi-use test instrument, this tester, although marketed to the HVAC sector, will also be useful for electricians and (with the frequent installation of electrically powered on-demand water heaters) plumbers. The rugged clip provided will secure the tool either in one's pocket or tool pouch and the moisture resistant, O-ring sealed battery compartment will add to its longevity under adverse weather conditions. Electrically, the tool will sense from 12V to 1000V. below 120 volts, the tool will emit a slow beep...above that level, the beep will be more rapid. Frequencies from 50 to 500 Hz can be sensed (which may be a limitation if one works with higher frequency variable Frequency Drive motors operating at higher frequencies). The 4:1 sensing "cone" ratio for the IR thermometer will be adequate for most applications, such as checking for proper flow in condenser or evaporator coils (for the HVAC tech) or overheated contacts and terminations for the electrician. The tool is rated for use down to 32 degrees F (no doubt limited by the LCD display) requiring some care as to storage and use, however the sensing device can measure down to minus 22 degree F (just keep it in your pocket in between readings). Operation is quite intuitive in either temperature or voltage sensing modes. If one prefers to read temperature in degrees C, the display can be easily toggled to do so. The voltage sensing element is well protected by a substantial plastic "nose" to prevent damage. All in all...a very well built tool.
