Q:Wmcksmith, how does it work without batteries if you are testing a receptacle that typically would not be outputting any power if it is being troubleshooted?
I think you answered "no" too quickly and should correct it not to mislead anyone.

Answer This Question
A:Â This tester is not like the ones with 3 lights that you have to look on the chart to decipher the state of the wiring. This unit has an LCD display that tells you the state of the wiring in writting word. It requires batteries to operate.

But Not complicated works very well very handy and my retired. Electrician friend was impressed by it. If you forget to turn off the batteries, it will shut itself off, so I wouldn’t let the batteries be a big concern.

This is a great tester with which you can test and diagnose variety of problems such as improper wiring, faulty grounds, timing for tripping of GFCI receptables and most importantly - voltage fluctuations. This is particularly helpful when you need to diagnose and service generators, flickering lights due to deteriorating connections on your main panel and so on. For the price, it is a must have in every service van and toolbelt and a very good addition to a home's repair kit.

Great kit
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a very practical kit and is easy to use. I like that the non contact voltage tester has a built in torch which is very useful when using this in dimly lit areas. The GFCI receptacle tester has two light indicators and a large LCD screen which is bright and easy to read. It comes with batteries included as well as a case to store the kit in. Overall, I am very happy with this set and it is a great addition to my tool kit.

Magnificent electrical testers.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] To begin with, I have a lot of confidence in this excellent brand. The design of both testers is very practical and comfortable, it is super easy to use and you do not have to be an expert electrician since with this tester you have the exact data of any outlet and even in the absence of light it has a built-in flashlight to facilitate the job. I really like that it resists up to 1000volt which allows me to use it with confidence. It's great that the voltage tester is waterproof and very comfortable to wear. I think it's great that the kit includes the batteries and a case for storage and can even be carried on the belt. Super recommended.

These two tools are the minimum you want to have before working on an electrical circuit and then afterwards, to verify that the repair/upgrade was done correctly. Both Klein electrical testers are versatile, reliable, rugged, and compact. They are designed with the user’s safety in mind and are certainly the easiest to use. Klein also includes batteries and a nylon storage case that holds both testers to help with keeping my tool bag organized.
The Klein non-contact tester allows you to check for AC voltage without having to touch any bare wires; the tip flashes either red or blue (user-selectable lower voltage detection) and the beeper sounds. It also has a built-in flashlight for working in dark environments.
The Klein receptacle tester identifies wiring issues on most standard 110-125V/60-Hz, 3-prong outlets and GFCI protected outlets. Simply plug it into the outlet and, with the bright, easy-to-see LED's, verify correct wiring or identify common wiring errors. Additionally, the AC voltage value is shown now on the lighted display. This tool also features a separate GFCI test button that sends a tripping current to a GFCI protected outlet. With this integrated GFCI test showing the time it took the outlet to de-energize on the illuminated display, I can feel secure in knowing that the GFCI protection is functioning correctly.

The KLEIN TOOLS PREMIUM NON-CONTACT VOLTAGE AND GFCI RECEPTACLE ELECTRICAL TEST KIT is a good combo kit that provides two excellent tools when working with electricity. The non-contact voltage meter works well, is compact, and includes a flashlight to help the user see wiring in dark areas such as under cabinets, behind furniture or in cavities. The GFCI receptacle tester has a large LCD screen and two light indicators, one red and one green to indicate whether the GFCI is wired correctly. The LCD screen provides additional information on the wiring of the device. Both items require batteries, which are included. So many products don't come with batteries anymore, it's nice to see when batteries are included. And, a carrying case is included. The two criticisms have to do with the GFCI tester. First, to install or change the batteries, you have to use a phillips-head screwdriver to open the battery compartment, requiring more effort than should be needed to change batteries. Second, I've got an older tester made by a competitor that is smaller, doesn't require batteries, and does pretty much the same thing. Admittedly, it does not have an LCD screen, but the smaller size helps when carrying tools in a work belt onto a jobsite. Otherwise both products are excellent and a good addition to your tool collection.

Very nice duel tool kit. Contains two devices, both well designed. The RT250 GFCI tester works as a plain plug in circuit tester but also includes functions to fully test a GFCI including trip speed. Easy to use. The NCVT-3P non-contact voltage tester works well, detects active circuits up to a few inches away, even will detect active USB cords. Includes a flashlight that can be used alone, or in conjunction with the tester. Both units require 2AA's, and are included in the package. Both are drop tested to 6.6 feet, have high safety ratings and the NCVT is rated at IP67. The NCVT has a pocket clip. The kit comes with a nice pouch with a loop that is large enough for a large tool belt. Overall an impressive pair of functional tools.

These are two invaluable tools for working on electral items. The non-contact votage tester is amazing. It lets you tell if there is live voltage in a wire without having to actually touch the wire. You simply turn it on and hold it near the wire. It will show red if the wire is live. I have seen it happen more than once where you flip the breaker that says it is for the receptical you are going to work on but when you start working, it is still live. This lets you check before you start touching. It has two modes, 70 - 1000 Volts and 12 - 1000 Volts. The second is more sensitive so is prone to pick up extra activity. The first mode is the normal mode to use. It also has a little flashlight tip for those dark areas so you don't need the tool and a flashlight in the same small space.
The second tool is a GFCI Receptical Electrical Tester. You simply plug it into the socket and it will tell you if it is wired correctly and let's you test the circuit. This will test GFCI and regular receptical. If there is a fault it display what the fault is. (see the picture below) It comes with a handy carrying case and the batteries. If you change light fixtures, plug-ins, switches, this is a must. I have several other Klein Tools meters and testers and the quality has always been impecable. I would recommend these without hesitation.

This tester's model number is Klein RT250. It's a well design product with many features. Probably the most important features are: 1) once inserted, it shows the voltage of the power outlet; 2) for GFCI outlet, it shows you if there are any wiring faults; 3) it has a green light and red light, from where you can easily tell if there are any issues or everything is alright. There are two free batteries that comes with the package. The only thing I don't like is that the plastic package is hard to open.
