Thank you for your inquiry. You will want to be using one of the portable jigs like the R3, 310 or 320 jigs. Or for that thickness, I would recommend using the 920 XL Jig. That will give you really strong joints.
Will this jig allow you attach 1/2 inch plywood to a 2/4?
Thank you for your inquiry. When working with lumber of two different thicknesses, you will want to be using the smaller thickness settings and screw length. So for this case, you will be using the 1/2" settings with a 1" screw.

I bought this and the first time I used it the bit shattered into three pieces. How do I get a replacement bit?

Call the seller The one I have is the best purchase I have made in a long time. I use that more than I use complete kit. I have drilled thousands of holes with the original bit. Only thing I can think of applying to much pressure and not drilling straight in. Or drill has to much torc, lower it down. Will work fine for you.
Does the carrying case have room for the clamp that doesn't come with the jig?
Back when I bought jig there was a free smaller face clamp included that doesn't fit in jig case but does fit in small box the case & clamp were sold in. I also keep a 1 hole jig in the box.
It is too compact to include a clamp. It is quite compact.
I am sorry to say the carrying case for the Kreg R3 does not have room for a clamp.
