Do I have to use specific screws?

I'm new to woodworking but do I have to use specific screws or will just wood screws work with this to build a small end table with light wood?
Asked by: Kevin
to me this is a definite yes. you need a smooth shank on the screw to be able to pull the opposing board tightly. you can find other choices on the internet. look under pocket hole screws. any screw will probably work buy you won't be happy with the results.

On soft woods like pine, you do have to be careful not to over-tighten the screws. I do glue anyway. I read some of the complaints. About "plastic," on first use, the directions are clear about excess plastic being stripped away. About "should be aluminum not cheap plastic", the whole point of plastic is to create a tight, smooth, non-dulling channel for the bit, I found that all worked as advertised. On "difficult to adjust," I'm simply confused. Press the tabs on the sides in far enough, everything clicks securely into place at the measurements. Have patience, drill slowly and smoothly, screw carefully, works like a charm.

It made assembly very easy. Adjustment to different thickness pieces was simple and took only seconds. A handy set up jig for setting drill depth was included and is also very easy to use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must for the beginner and the advanced builder! As a self-taught female woodworker this little tool has opened up endless possibilities to me. I started by deciding to build the farm table I have always wanted to buy but couldn't afford. This little tool opened up the world of woodworking to me. With it the complexity and intimidation of building is gone. With a good plan and this little jig I can conquer any project! Pocket holes eliminate the intimidation of complex joinery and this jig makes gauging and drilling them a piece of cake!! Since my farm table I have gone on to build at least 13 other projects for my self and have commissions coming in for farm tables....all thanks to this little tool!!

The jig pocket hole comes in a case that makes setting the stop on the bit effortless. You really don't need the clamp to hold it down because the grey base comes off and there is a hole for a screw to fasten it. My only complaints were the store display gave you no idea what size screw to buy and after I returned to buy the right screws, they only carry one size exterior screw even though the manufacturer makes many. The product it's self works extremely well. The PVC window trim frames that I fabricated on the ground and installed in place looked fantastic.

For someone who is using this consistently every day you need to be able to use it fast. I'm not going to spend $40 on a clamp when I can use a set screw. The problem is after about three pieces of furniture the hole where the set screw goes melts from the Heat. I've melted about 20 of these in 2018 alone because I use it that much. Not sure why they can't make an aluminum insert.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just What I Needed I was in between getting this one and the smaller one without the place for the clamp and I am really glad I got this one, worth the bit extra money because you get a perfect pocket hole every time. The small tabs on the end that measure the depth make it straight every time. I also just bought a regular metal clamp that worked just fine. I am a complete amateur woodworker at best and I had no problem using it. Pretty fool proof!

This joining system is a little pricey, but well worth the money once you get the hang of it. The drill bit is very sharp, high quality, and keeps it's cutting edge for a very long time even in tough hardwoods. The only thing I wish Kreg would change is the bit stop adjustment guide that's built into the plastic case. If you lose the case or break it you no longer have a scale to set the depth stop.

I was able to face my custom handmade, ergonomic kitchen cabinets. I was able to seamlessly drill pocket holes in the brazilian cherry facia and mahogany doors. I tried to do the holes manually but it was horrible and I ended up wasting a whole door. NEVER MORE now that I have the Jig Pocket Hole system.
