Questions & Answers

Drain plug ?

Does this unit have a drain pan or drain plug I have to maintain ? I just bought it and put it in the window -- now second guessing myself about this. Thanks
Asked by: jayceegee
A drain hole is present on the exterior of the unit. with it properly installed. ( the back is tilted slightly lower than the front) the condensation drains out the hole to the ground below. If this is unacceptable there is a secondary adapter that installs in the drain hole and you can attach a hose (not included) to direct the the drain flow to where you want it to go.

I want to use this in my garage. Can I cut a hole in one of the walls and install accordingly?

Asked by: BuckeyeMike
Yes you can install it in a through the wall configuration with a few minor modifications. I have done this quite a few times with this particular AC unit. Here's some simple steps that will help. 1) Remove the tabs on the underneath of the AC unit. They work great to hold the unit in window openings, but will get in the way when installing through the wall. The easiest way to remove them is to bend them down and then back up multiple times to break the spot welds. It isn't hard to do at all. You should know that this modification probably isn't recommended by LG or the Home Depot. I have not had any problems doing this about 10 times now though. 2) Remove the "L" shaped bracket from the top of the AC unit. Turn it around 180 degrees and move it to the front lip of the AC housing and reinstall it. The three small screws that hold it in place will not cause any internal damage. You may need to pilot some small holes to reinstall the screws. Just make sure you don't allow the drill to go in very far if you are piloting. 3) Measure carefully for your framing. The measurements should be tight enough to hold the AC but allow clearance for the screws on the side of the case. Also, if you look on the underside of the unit you will notice it is not completely flat. You will have to frame for the smallest dimension top to bottom near the front faceplate of the AC. When installing the unit, you will remove the "L" shaped bracket from the top and insert the unit from the outside of the house, pushing it in. If you framed everything tightly, it should hold itself in place while you go inside and reinstall the L bracket. The added height of the bottom pan at the rear of the unit will keep it from being able to be pushed in to the house all the way. The "L" bracket can be drilled for a few small holes to install screws holding it in the wall. The vents outside should all be visible once installed, with only about 1 inch of the metal casing visible inside the house (which will correlate to the area directly underneath the "L" bracket you moved on the top of the unit). For added security you can remove the front panel and run a few screws through the inside of the case and into the studs you framed the opening with. Don't forget to make sure there is a slight tilt downwards at the back of the unit, and to caulk around the outside well. A few pieces of trim around the unit inside will make it look much better if you want to spruce things up a bit. I hope the info helps! I've attached a couple pics to try to illustrate how it should look inside once it is installed.

6,000 BTU 115-Volt Window Air Conditioner with Remote is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 218.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cool Buy My husband and I love this air conditioner. It keeps our bedroom nice and chilly. I love having the remote in case we want to change temperature or turn it off. The price was right and this was a great buy. We would most definitely reccomend to family and friends. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Tale of Two Air Conditioners We bought two units; one for each of our two bedrooms. The unit in our master bedroom works really well and is very quiet. The unit in the second bedroom was really loud and made a sort of "Wah Wah Wah" noise, as though something was unbalanced. We returned the defective unit and the replacement works well. The bottom line: Return the air conditioner if it is loud.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best A/C Unit for your Dollar I bought a brand name at another store and had to take it back b/c it was terribly loud. I decided to spend an additional $20 and buy this one after reading the reviews...and I'm glad I did. This LG A/C unit is great!! It is much quieter than the other brand I bought. When the compressor kicks on it is a nice, easy bump unlike some units. I don't even notice it any longer. It cools our 15x12 room quickly and the installation was easy. No surprises here except for the great quality that all LG products seem to have. I highly recommend this A/C unit to anyone who needs to make their summers a bit cooler.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LG A/C Worth the Price I purchased this the end of March and let it sit. Almost 2 months later I opened the box, and it was perfect, I installed the A/C last night and WOW, it was very quiet. I placed it in a 12x12 room and when I started the A/C the room was 85, within 30 minutes it was cooled down too 78 and I did not shut the doors too cool the room down faster, I left them open. I am very pleased I purchased this A/C, nice looking and remote works excellently.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Noisey but an easy fix Yes I agree the unit is noisy. You know the foam they put in the box with every new A/C unit that you throw away? Cut three one inch strips off of it, pull the front panel open, space them evenly across the top, and push the panel back on. It's not a loud compressor, just a rattling front cover. I have it in a 10x12' computer room and it's 3' from my ear. Nice and quiet now. Works fine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LG 6,000 BTU Window Air Conditioner Unit with Remote We purchased two of these units to help our old central AC keep working a little longer. Glad we did. They lowered our electric bill by $100 a month. And right now as I'm typing, our old AC unit has gone out completely and our house is staying cool enough with just the two units. We are heading to Home Depot now to purchase one more.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Good cooling but horribly loud !!! Picked it up two days ago. Attaching the side curtains with 8 screws was a pain (took 2 attempts to get them mounted correctly). Instructions poor. The unit and side curtains do NOT cover an opening width in a 36 inch window (as stated). It was short by almost 6in and needed to be filled in with cardboard and duct tape. Once mounted and turned on, the fun really began. The compressor & fan was very loud with a rhythmic thumping / ticking sound. On top of that sound, the plastic front grill and plastic front housing would rattle relentlessly. It can best be described as "cement mixer" sound with plastic rattle on top.... It's going back today.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Okay, but not great It's not terrible, but it's not great. We put this in our bedroom to replace a 5 year old cheap unit we bought at WalMart. It still worked, but after being used for so many years, I was worried about its safety. This one doesn't do have the job the old one did. The old air conditioner would cool our bedroom off in about 30 minutes. This unit takes about 2 hours, and even then, it's not cool. It doesn't really seem to have a "high" setting (seems just like the low). When we leave it on all night, it's finally cool about 5AM, but then it's also cool outside by then. We'll definitely be buying a new one next summer, which is unfortunate.
