It depends on the particular stainless steel alloy. The kind used on refrigerator doors (what's called a ferritic alloy) will work with this magnet. The kind used for cookware, kitchen sinks and similar items (what's called an austenitic alloy or 18-8 stainless or 18-10 stainless) will not work with this magnet.
