The Maxx Air 18 in. ventilation fan is ideal for use in mild climates during the morning or evening, efficiently pulling in fresh air through open windows and removing hot, stale air from your home through the attic exhaust vents for a cool and comfortable living environment. Unlike a standard whole house fan, our ducted fans feature a damper box that is sealed with R5 insulation to prevent heat transfer back into your home, and a 12 ft. duct for maximum ventilation potential and noise reduction. The fan head mounts to an attic rafter with the included hanging bracket for an easier, faster install than a traditional whole house fan. It's a cost-effective solution to improving your indoor air quality while relieving strain on your house's air conditioning equipment.
  • Designed for home spaces up to 930 sq. ft.
  • Galvanized steel fan housing and plenum box with R5 insulation

Answer This Question

A:  This unit does have a length of 14 inches. However, they require a rough opening of 14-½” x 22-½”. Because of this rough opening requirement, it sounds as though your area will be too small to accommodate. The damper assembly box is designed for horizontal installation only. The dampers will not function in the vertical position. If you have any further questions, please call us at (800) 433-1626.

A:  Hello Ki, our 14" ducted whole house fan does not include a reverse option.

    by|May 5, 2023

A:  I would say NO...It has an R-5 insulated backflow damper at the ceiling but I see where it may be an issue since many jurisdictions are requiring thermal break to meet current prescriptive r-values in the energy code. That said, you will want the fan in the attic to reduce noise where it will pull the air out versus pushing exhaust air against the damper which would create more fan noise. You may want to look at the Battic Door version that has an R-50 motorized door and even a wifi control to meet your needs and possibly even code compliance with a thermal door.

      Answer This Question

A:  Hello GarageMan, our 14" ducted whole house fan is rated at 6.6 sones at 1289 CFM on low speed. We rate our attic fan noise in sones instead of decibels for a more accurate rating.

A:  Mine said 3500 CFM on the paperwork and the side of the box. There are multiple sizes so make sure you get the one you need.

This fan is a tremendous improvement over a traditional whole house fan. The motor and fan assembly are mounted in the attic, connected to the plenum and intake grill (mounted in the ceiling) by a large metal flexible duct hose. The plenum also has 2 insulated doors the open to allow air to be pulled from inside the house, and then close tightly when the fan is off. While you can hear it run, the noise level is much less than a traditional fan with the motor and fan blades in the ceiling. Installation is not difficult if you have easy access to your attic, as the motor assembly and duct hose must fit through your access point. If you have blown in insulation, be sure to aim the fan towards the peak of your roof, as I blew away a 5 foot circle of my blown in fiberglass on the initial test run! Installation also requires the installation of 2 switches and running electrical wires. If you're not comfortable doing your own wiring consider hiring a professional for the electrical.

This fan works quite well and moves a lot of air, the construction is decent but is not anything special. It is quite easy to install just mount the bracket to a roof rafter hook up the wires, cut a hole in your ceiling for the ceiling grid, then connect it to the ceiling grate and you are ready to go. It comes with the mounting bracket and some nuts and bolts you may need to supply some of your hardware depending on your mounting. It has a flexible duct so you can mount the fan from about 2 ft to 12 ft away from the ceiling box. You will need about 24 inches +/- clearance above the ceiling mount to install the box and hose. The box that is above the grate is about 14" wide x 23" Long x 12" tall, and had 2 insulated flaps that close when the fan is not running. It is fairly quiet but I don't know if I would want it running over my head while trying to sleep or watch TV, I measured the decibels at 72db on low at 2 ft and 64db at 10 ft, and 78db on high at 2 ft and 73db at 10 ft. It is a little quieter when in the attic installed. It took about 6 minutes to clear my 350 sq ft garage of smoke on low and about 4 on high. It would have been nice to have a timer included with the controls. When the unit arrived none of the bolts were tight so make sure you check them, also the fan had shifted during shipping and needed to be adjusted so the blade would turn. There are adjustment on the fan and motor mounts which is nice. There is no box included for mounting the switches. All in all a decent fan that brings in a lot of air into my 1200 sq ft house.

Overall, I am very pleased with this assembly. Everything is included as needed, instructions are well written (with an electrical wiring disclaimer, of course), all components are included, including electrical switches (copper and rough-in not included). each of the individual components are pretty light weight and easy to maneuver, which makes installation a bit simpler. The fan is well-built and robust. The coating on the fan seems pretty thick, so I expect it to be corrosion resistant for a long time. I especially like the vent that opens to the house. It has a one-way insulated gate, which is done by two light weight doors that are held closed by gravity when not in use, and open via fan suction. They have insulating foam on the back sides of the door that is light weight enough to keep the doors thermally isolated but still functional. While I am sure that if you got this item in store, it would be fine, however for me it was shipped directly to my house via a common residential courier. The packaging was not designed for residential couriers at all. The sheet metal opening came damaged and required some work to straighten out and make it usable again. looking at the packaging I believe it would be fine if delivered to a commercial store and not thrown around in delivery trucks. The packaging was a little disappointing to an other wards well built item.

I bought this fan and it makes a weird humming noise and it showed up with the fan blade hitting the housing . I had to return back to HD.

            2nd go around
I grew up with the loud traditional helicopter blade whole house fans and it worked well. When I bought my first home I decided to go with the quiet cool whole house fan and it worked really well I loved the sound level on it. I had smaller unit in my master bedroom and one in the hallway. Unfortunately I moved so I decided to try out the ventamatic because of the price point. I was s little disappointed because it was louder and I felt it didn’t move as much air. It used a dryer duct rather than the acoustical duct quiet cool uses. The concept of whole house fans work but I would give it a 2.5 stars because of the quality and noise level. However I did like the screwless grille.

When we built our house we knew we wanted a whole house fan, but didn’t want to install one right away to save a few dollars during construction. We had the electricians prewire, and a year later, we reached the point where we were ready to get the fan. I love the design of this fan – the motor hangs from the roof rafters so there is very little motor or vibration noise in the living space below. I’m pretty handy so I tackled the installation myself and it was pretty straight forward following the included instructions. Although we were prewired, I still had an electrician make the electrical connections because electrical work is one thing I refuse to touch. I expect this fan to get a lot of use this upcoming season and save us some money on our utilities!

I grew up with one of these in my house and I have wanted to install one for years. This comes with everything you need but the wiring. The included switches have power and speed control so you just need to wire them in. My memory of the fan in the house I grew up in was thinking a jet was taking off when you turned it on. Not sure if it is new technology or the fan being ducted away from the ceiling but I was surprised how much quieter this fan is compared to my memory. I was also pleasantly surprised by the insulated baffles that automatically open when you turn on the fan and close once it is off. I was thinking I would have to rig something in the winter to keep from losing heat but so far it is doing great and the outside temps are in the low 20's at night. my favorite bit is being able to come home open a window at each end of the house, I put the fan in the middle, and with in a few minutes I have cooled down the house without using the AC.

              poorly made
I bought this product and was very disappointed. It is cheaply made. The blade hits the motor housing and makes a constant ticking noise. In addition, the so called duct looks likt a big dryer vent. Avoid buying

Hello Jason, I’m sorry you were disappointed with the product you received. At Ventamatic all of our products are engineered for quality and customer experience. Our ducting isn’t insulated because our engineers performed exhaustive side by side testing on insulated and uninsulated ducting and found that the insulation did not affect sound levels or performance. Our intake box is equipped with a built in back flow damper and R5 insulation to ensure that your house stays cool and you stay happy. The blade hitting the motor housing is certainly not intended and is not a common occurrence – our customer service and engineering team will be happy to troubleshoot this issue with at 1-800-433-1626.

Thank you Jason, and we look forward to continuing to provide you with high quality home ventilation.

This is going to be one of best additions to our warehouse office space. We have a huge open warehouse with offices inside. There are no windows that open to the outside, only a front and back door and when it's 110 outside inside the warehouse feels like 125! This will help move fresh air into the office space and hot air out into the warehouse. This is the ideal solution for our situation as we can go right through the ceiling, between the ceiling joists and vent directly into the warehouse. The duct is 12 feet long which lets us place it far away from the ceiling to reduce noise and vibration from the fan. Comes with everything you need; hanging brackets, duct, damper box, intake grille, switches and screws. Made of heavy duty galvanized steel. Well constructed to last and move a whole lot of air! Wish we had got one of these years ago. Will be getting another one for our other office location.
