About This Product

The Milwaukee 10-1000V Dual Range Voltage Detector is the first Non-Contact Voltage Detector with the ability to Light Up, Detect, and Differentiate Automatically. The expanded sensitivity ranges of 10-49V offers the ability to detect voltage in common systems that would normally go undetected when using a standard voltage detector. These systems include: LED Lighting, Fire Detection and Suppression Systems, HVAC Controls, and Security & Access Controls, along with many others. The 10-1000V Dual Range Voltage Detector not only detects, but also differentiates 10-49 Volts from the standard voltage range of 50-1000-Volt. It does so by using a uniquely colored LED indicators and audible tones, delivering the clearest indication of these two voltage ranges. A built-in LED work light allows for increased visibility in low-lit areas, and automatic shut-off after 5 minutes helps preserve battery life. The 10-1000-Volt Dual Range Voltage Detector is a best-in-class voltage detection solution for any Electrician, HVAC Technician, or Facilities Maintenance Technician.

Q:Whats the differance between this one and the other milwaukee tester?

Answer This Question

A:  Milwaukee actually has 3 that I know of. This one (2203-20) is dual range so it gives different indications for voltage that's 10-49 volts and 50-1000 volts. It also has an LED flashlight on the end. The two other testers are 50-1000 volts only. The 2202-20 model that looks like this is only 50-1000 volts but also has a flashlight. The other one, 2200-20, is also 50-1000 volts range but no flashlight. That's as much as I can figure out anyway.

Q:someone re-stuccoed over our doorbell wire so we don't know where the wire is. Assuming it's the standard 8-24 volts, and just sitting there somewhere in the wall, will this detector be able to find it if it's 10-24 volts?

A:  No. You need to make contact with the conductors in order to successfully test.

                  not a smart purchase
If your a pro do not purchase this tool it will break. The tester works great but the plastic button on the top of the unit will break off. I purchased one for all my techs and every single one had the same issue and all around 2 to 3 months. I tried one more unit but this one had the dual range and the same thing happen. Less then 3 months the plastic button on the top of the unit broke off. This tester has a one year warranty if purcahsed with an authorized dealer. But dealing with milwaukee warranty department is a joke. They will definitely make you feel like your inconveniencing them and talk to you like your worthless. This dual range tester I sent back its now going on two months with milwaukee Eservice with still no fix.

Yup, it's a tick tracer. About as accurate as you can get testing with ncv. Better than my old Klein one. Haven't been hit yet using it so I'm happy.

Very sensitive down to low voltages with work light
This is a really great non-contact voltage tester. It can detect voltages in the range of 10 to 1,000 Volts. A yellow LED blinks for the 10-49V range while a red LED blinks for the 50-1,000V range. A different audible tone is generated for each range as well so even if you can't see which color LED is on for some reason, you can tell by the loud, piercing tones being generated. This can detect voltages lower than other electrical test pens I've seen and used so you can use it when testing either line voltage or low voltage wires. A white LED serves as a flashlight while the detector is on which is helpful since you'll be using this a lot to double-check the power is off after turning off the breaker. It's fairly bright. The detector will turn itself off after 5 minutes do you don't accidentally drain the 2 AAA batteries while not in use. When you first turn the detector on it will beep twice and you'll see a green power LED as well as the flashlight so you know it's on but it's a good idea to test it against a known live wire to make sure it's working properly. The tip can be inserted into a slot in an outlet but I find it's so sensitive that you can just hold it close to the outlet and it will start beeping. To be on the safe side though, always check the outlet by inserting the probe into each slot. On switched outlets, once I switched the power off, the beeping and lights turned off. It's very sensitive and even started beeping indicating a 10-49V signal when I held it up against some USB cables which are 5V DC. Worked on the 24V cables that run to my thermostat and even the doorbell wiring. If you rub it quickly back and forth on carpet it even beeps, I guess from the static electricity? It doesn't just randomly beep by waiving it quickly in the air, except in my office near a ton of computer equipment. While this can differentiate fairly well between high and low voltages, you shouldn't rely on it to be a substitute for a multimeter (which Milwaukee also makes too.) This is a tool that is helpful in quickly diagnosing problems (like finding out which bulb is burnt out in a string of Christmas lights, or seeing if power is getting to a light or outlet) and to make sure there is no power running to a box before you start doing some electrical work. It works really well for its intended purpose and is much faster than busting out the multimeter, unwrapping the probes, removing the protective tips and then making sure you you have good contact with the hot and neutral wires. Just pull it out of your pocket, tap the switch on and place it on the wires and you know if there's power or not.

                      Regrets…. I’ve had a few….
Bought this detector as I trusted the Milwaukee name and liked the idea of the auto ranging function. In practice, this machine is far too sensitive, and picks up just about everything in the general area from low-voltage to regular voltage and it’s constantly squawking and beeping. It is oh so frustrating.

I will start of by saying I love my Milwaukee tools. But this particular item I’m not sure if it was a one off or for all. But I had to return it because it was giving incorrect readings. Showing there was no voltage when there was 240v. I’m giving it 2 stars just because of the easy way that Home Depot handled my exchange.
