Questions & Answers

can it be used as grounding rod for ham radio

Asked by: richard
Electrical ground rods come in two flavors; 5/8" zinc coated or 5/8" copper clad. It is proved that neither will carry 10-amps through the ground. I'm an Electrician and I've never used copper tubing BUT the code allows us to bury steel conduit so I would have no reservations using copper tube. Notice I said, 'bury', not 'driven' into the ground, so it doesn't matter. When you attach $6 wire, make sure it is solid, not stranded wire.

What is the inside diameter of the pipe

I need to be able to bend the pipe, so I would need a pipe bending spring. What spring OD would I use?
Asked by: Maxx
ah 1/2"... as it's 1/2" copper, not soft copper intended for plumbing and heating...you need a roll of copper, and shouldn't need a spring

What is the difference between type L & type M copper pipe?

What is the difference between type L & type M copper pipe?
Asked by: Truffy
L is a heavier pipe than M. In household plumbing L is more commonly used. M can be used in lighter projects.

Why does Home Depot's description of type L pipe show a larger inside diameter than the type M?

a larger inside diameter with the same outside diameter indicates a thinner wall, yet type L is supposed to be thicker. is the description backwards?
Asked by: Nick
Dear Nick, You are correct, type L (aka BLUE) pipe is thicker in the walls than the type M pipe(aka RED). The engineering specification is that L is 0.040" thick, and M is 0.028" thick, which is about 40% thicker for the L type. I had to research this because no human in the store knew what the difference between the two types were. As you probably already understand, the OD of the pipes must stay the same for L & M, so that the fit into elbows, tees etc remains constant for both types, thus the ID must be less for the Type L. Just to confirm for you, I just now remeasured the Nominal 1/2" copper pipe, type L (Blue) and here are the results OD = 0.625", ID = 0.545" thus the wall thickness is indeed 0.040". Now as to the organization of HD and their website data for products, I find gross contradictions and errors in about 30% of their data on the website. I believe that they are underpaying bored interns and high school students to input data, and most people don't pay attention or think about their answers or the work that they are inputting in the computer database. This forum (Q & A) will not correct the error that you found. I have done this by calling Home Depot and taking the time to get to a data base manager and tell them to correct the problem. They will fix it, but you will lose another 1/2 hour of your life, fixing their error. Good luck! Mr "Doitmyself"
