Q:I see many incorrect responses here by people that are not Nibco tech support. What pipe metallurgies are compatible with the stainless steel insert? From what I have read, galvanized metals are not compatible but brass/copper is compatible, correct?

Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for your inquiry on the NIBCO 1/2 in. CPVC-CTS and 90-Degree S x FIPT Drop Elbow Fitting. For domestic water systems specifically, the best practice would be to use the same material if possible. In this case, the stainless steel Copper and Bronze/Brass are fairly close together on the Active (Anodic) list so they should be ok/acceptable. If dissimilar metals must be used within a plumbing system, connect the two pipes with dielectric connections, which will prevent electrical contact between the two dissimilar metals. The use of dielectric unions/connections may also be required by local codes and may different between different Authority having Jurisdictions. Galvanized steel being coated with Zinc would not be recommended for a direct connection to these materials and a dielectric union of some kind should be used if the materials must be mixed in a system. If you have additional questions, you can reach a NIBCO Technical Services Advisor, M-F 8am - 5pm EST, by phone at (888) 446-4226.

Q:What metals are used for the female fitting ?

    Answer This Question

A:  1/2" female pipe thread. You can use galvanized pipe. This is a drop ear for a shower arm. The shower arm usually comes with a shower head kit. The shower arm can be about 8" and comes in chrome, nickel, brass and other colors. If you were using this for a tub spout then you could run a copper male 1/2" thread to sweat.

A:  Thank you for your inquiry on the NIBCO 1/2 in. CPVC-CTS and 90-Degree S x FIPT Drop Elbow Fitting. The threaded end is a Stainless Steel FIPT insert. If you have additional questions, you can reach a NIBCO Technical Services Advisor, M-F 8am - 5pm EST, by phone at (888) 446-4226.

Q:If this is to be used as a drop ear for a sink, what supply line valve would you recommend? Since this is SS, there are few/no options available for SS shut off valves and mixing brass with SS is not recommended (unlike metals dont play nice).

A:  Sorry I would only use this for shower head connection.

A:  Thank you for your inquiry on the NIBCO 1/2 in. CPVC-CTS and Lead-Free Copper Silicon Alloy Pressure 90-Degree S x FIPT Drop Elbow Fitting. Generally Drop ears are used to make a 90-Degree turn from a piping into a fixture like a shower head. The compatibility between Stainless steel and copper/copper alloys like brass or bronze is fine and galvanic reaction between these materials is negligible and would not require something like an dielectric union. You should check with their local code enforcement to see what is acceptable for your area and what they recommend for their installation/system you are working with. If you have additional questions, you can reach a NIBCO Technical Services Advisor, M-F 8am - 5pm EST, by phone at (888) 446-4226.

              Exactly What I Needed!
My project involved removing my existing shower control valve connected by PEX lines, and enable me to be able to connect the hot and cold lines of a new Shower Panel with Braided Stainless Steel screw on lines...Much like a washing machine connects. This fitting was the only fitting to enable me to do that successfully, and without any difficulties whatsoever. Overall, I am extremely pleased with the quality of this fitting, and Highly Recommend it.

The product I received was threaded (pipe pointed up when tightened not downward) improperly. I’m sure I just grabbed one that was faulty.

Forget sweating copper. I don't like Pex because it's never neat. CPVC is the way to go. CPVC looks neat and is fun, fast & easy.

This is a very good transition fitting. I used it for showerhead when replacing my shower valve. This 90 degree transition fitting made it east to go from cpvc pipe it nipple for showerhead. In plumbing world this transition fitting is known as a "dog ear". It's a sturdy strong fitting that can be used in a lot of different ways. Basically glue n your cpvc pipe to dog ear then screw in your nipple using Teflon tape or choice of sealer. It works everytime it's used properly. Work saver. I've used them many years and it makes work easy and saves time.
