1-1/2 in. Chrome-Plated Brass Sink Drain P-Trap - The Home Depot What has better longevity: This part or is PVC?
    ByDec 14, 2022
    1 Answer |
    Answer This Question

Brass generally offers better longevity than PVC in drain applications. Brass is more resistant to corrosion and damage from high temperatures, making it a more durable choice for the long term. While PVC is a cost-effective option, it can become brittle and crack over time, especially when exposed to heat. For example, some chemicals used in drain cleaning can damage PVC, while brass is more resistant to such chemicals.

Does it include the slip nut & washer that connects the wall bend to the Marvel/Stub Out on the wall? If not, what is the part number for the nut and washer (I believe this washer should be tapered)?

                looks nice, no leaks
Just installed the Otaey 1-1/2 in. chrome-plated brass sink drain p-trap with a sink and vanity set, it fits good and looks nice with no leaks. The p-trap kit comes with seals, nuts and escutcheon for the install and fits together with minimal effort. The tubing is thin, but is made from brass for long life and corrosion resistance and is chrome plated for a nice clean look. Installation is fairly straight forward with installing the seals and tightening the nuts (I use a little clear silicone at the joints to prevent small leaks). Cutting the tubing is best done with a fine bladed hack saw and electrical or duct tape to protect the chrome finish and a fine file to smooth the edge off after cutting. The one issue I did have with kit is that the chrome finish was not smooth and mirror like, but other wise a nice drain kit.

                Well made and looks great
Bought this Oatey 1-1/2 in. Chrome-Plated Brass Sink Drain P-Trap kit to replace the one I have in our pedestal sink that has started to show the wear over the years. This new kit is made better the the one I am replacing but was easy to install. The hardest thing was to cut the pipe that goes into the drain, I use painters tape to wrap around the pipe and cut with a fine tooth blade hack saw.

This Oatey Chrome Plated P-Trap Is a High Quality Product With Many Advantages
I have used and trusted Oatey products for at least 40 years and never been disappointed. This is a high quality light commercial grade Brass with nice chrome plating. There are several reasons I prefer these metal sink connections over plastic. First, this Oatey Dearborn trap uses special True Blue slip joint washers that won’t dry out or crack over time and are made out of a thermo-elastomer material that retains its shape. As a result these washers provide ultimate leak protection. Second, I feel that this P-trap is much stronger than plastic. And lastly, it is a commercial grade 17 gauge thick, corrosion resistant brass plated with chrome for added protection. I also prefer 1 ½ inch diameter piping over 1 ¼ inch as it is less likely to stop up with debris. If needed, you can use a reducing washer to go from 1 ½ to 1 ¼ inch pipe. Not all p-traps are created equal and I recommend this product as much better than most.

                Oatey "Dearborn" P-Trap
In a nutshell, a p-trap is a u-shaped bend in the waste pipe that connects a sink’s drain to a home septic tank or to a municipal sewer system. Under normal circumstances, p-traps always contain some water. Indeed this Oatey product serves that purpose. It is marketed as part of oatey's "Dearborn" product line which aspires to deliver "superior quality products designed with the plumber in mind at competitive prices". I'm pretty confident this product meets that marketing tag-line and will do just fine serving it's purpose as I get to installing my new bathroom sink.

Oatey a trusted brand in plumbing accessories
Complete kit to replumb under your sink. Quality material use for piping, rubber seal is stout. To tighten the nut use a channel locks or pipe wrench on these solid nuts. Using Steel over plastic is recommended when sink is going to be subject to hot water use. The metal will handle the heat better than plastic. Metal isn't subject to expanding due to hot water avoiding unwanted leaks.

                Top of the line product
Oatey is top of the line company and makes great products that will last and last. This metal chrome plated brass sink drain P-trap has all the parts needed for a remodel or a new install. The kit comes with the O-rings or seal and everything fits with perfect. The collars unscrew easily and will make it easy to clean the P-trap when and as needed. This will look great with my new pedestal sink. High quality.

Good quality, includes everything from escutcheon plate to rubber washers
This chrome plated brass drain P-Trap is usually installed under pedestal supported or wall attached sinks. In my house all cabinet supported sinks have black ABS drain p-traps. This is because they are not exposed to human eye when cabinet doors are closed. However when you have a pedestal supported or wall attached sink you want that drain pipe to look nice and shiny. That is where this drain trap comes very handy. I want to install this p-trap under my utility sink. Currently utility sink has chrome down pipe connected to black ABS p-trap which in its turn connected to ABS drain pipe that goes in to wall. Not only chrome continuation will look nicer but brass p-trap is also more resistant to chemical erosion than ABS. Namely chemical erosion makes ABS inner surfaces rough and that causes it to catch lint inside P-trap. This new P-trap drain assembly comes with escutcheon plate and 3 rubber washers. To replace old ABS P-trap you simply need to cut off old ABS pipe close to wall leaving small margin to install included escutcheon and glue ABS slip nut joint coupling using ABS cement. Then insert brass pipe inside slip joint and tighten the nut. I would also recommend to get and install chrome plated box flange escutcheon to cover ABS slip joint nut coupling.

                Builder economy grade1 1/2” tubular chrome P-trap
The box in which this P-trap is packaged indicates this is a budget quality trap. Exactly what does that mean? I have probably installed many hundreds, if not a couple thousand P-traps over my 35+ years in the trade. What I found when I inspected this trap was one made of solid brass, with standard gaskets and nuts, but with a very poor chrome plated finish. Instead of the mirror-like smooth chrome I am accustomed to finding on a trap such as this one, instead I found on this one large areas where the chrome plating can be best described as a matte finish and rough. For those customers looking for a trap that is certainly a step up from tubular white plastic, this one might be satisfactory. However, for just a few dollars additional, you can get a trap with a uniform, high polished chrome finish from the same manufacturer right at Home Depot. It is made in China.
