Q:ARE ANY OF THESE AIR VENTS ADJUSTABLE? THE OATEY I JUST INSTALLED DOES NOT SEEM TO OPEN FOR THE DRAINING
        by|May 1, 2017

        Answer This Question

A:  AAV's operate by positive and negative pressures in your DWV (drain, waste & vent) system. You are using a 500 DFU unit which is way oversized for residential venting. That is why you are experiencing what you are. You will need a number 6 or 20 DFU (drain fixture unit) depending on how many fixtures you are venting. You can find more detailed information for sizing of these at www.oatey.com.

As a long time professional plumber I know quality and this is it. Gone are the days of us having to use those cheap black plastic abs moble home units with the cheap spring and rubber that fail in a year or two. THis thing works in all weather conditions and will never fail. As a plumber I have installed a 100 of these and never once had an issue. Save your money and time and buy this one first.

The Oatey 500DFU admittance valve: I chose the wrong size, thinking bigger is better. I've used Oatey plumbing products including supplementary venting, with good and consistent results. The 500 is made for bigger, commercial applications. You can do multiple reductions in pipe diameter, but it will not be as sensitive to pressure changes, as the right sized valve for the job. These valves come in several different sizes and the "20" and "60" are much more likely to give homeowners better outcomes. I went on a search to Oatey, and found the best, most complete information at the link below. It's a PDF of instructions that covers a lot of ground. I re-learned a few things: 1. Gravity works, so in piping out waste, the best path is an unobstructed downhill flow from drain to sewer. 2. Sewer gasses often don't obey rule#1, so we need traps and vents to keep nasty and flammable stuff from coming back in, and a primary outside vent for the stuff to go. That's why these valves are called "supplementary". They give additional support to your present/additional plumbing needs; keeping vacuum created by a big "gulp" of water from siphoning out the water from your traps by opening, and preventing a return of stinky combustibles by closing. It works well and installs just like any other PVC pipes so you need the PVC cleaner and then the glue. Simple cuts, a diverter, and a 3-4 inch riser pipe was what I needed to install this. Pretty basic plumbing that a weekend warrior like me to do it. It quickly resolved the pipe shaking issue, the slow drainage issue, and air pocket issues I was having in my basement bathroom.

I could have bought the cheap version for $4.99 but when it comes to plumbing drain and vent lines, the last thing I need is a unit that isn't built to a standard and a building inspector shaking his pointed finger at me, well that and junk coming out of an indoor vent under my kitchen sink. I don't know how it works, kinda like an automatic transmission; but they do and thus far....it's great. No smell, fast running drains!!!!!!!!!!
