Questions & Answers

how many sq. ft. does 50# cover

Asked by: billyboy
Depends how thick and green you want it. I used a fertilizer spreader between 3 & 4 setting to get the effect I wanted.

Is there a shelf life for this seed. Can I buy a 50# bag and use it to plant for more than one year?

Asked by: GORDON
The color of grass is different year to year. I save my extra seed every year and some years I have bought way to much. Some of the rye grass is darker green and some is lighter.

At what time do you seed in Md.???

Asked by: Herbie
Hi Herbie, Annual Ryegrass is a cool season grass, which is planted in the spring or fall. However, it will die out in summer temperatures so it’s best planted in the fall. Thanks!

10 lb. Annual Ryegrass Seed is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 549.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice green yard in less than 2 weeks! Followed the directions and had a nice green lawn all winter. I had a full green yard in about 10 days. Steps I took: I mowed the yard shorter than normal (2 on my tractor). Then picked up any remaining clippings and leaves. Dropped the seed and kept them wet by running my sprinklers 5-7 minutes per zone 2X a day (morning and evening). I did that till the grass came up then adjusted my sprinklers to 5-10 minutes 1X a week unless we had rainfall. I added Scott's Fall Fertilizer (maroon bag) after the first mow which helped green up the lawn. After 6-8 weeks I dropped another round of the Scott's Fall Fertilizer which allowed the grass to continue to grow and helped green up some more. It is best to drop this seed 30 days before the first freeze. Normally that is early October here in North Texas but this year it was nearly the end of October before it was cool enough to germinate. This was an overseed over my Bermuda here in North Texas. This rye requires a mow every 4-6 weeks.

As any lawn product, identifying the variables of your yard in your area prior to purchasing the product, you may discover you not only need this product, but; related product(s) suggested by the manufacturer, such as; lime. In this case; Rocky Mtn. area holds unique circumstances unlike a lower altitude. Soil conditions can be a challenge at best and knowing your lawns performance from previous season(s) is a must when sorting and planning the current seasons activities last season I used a variety of seed and received a mix of results, that said; Yes green grass in some areas and none in others. I discovered I needed to treat the soil first. As per the instructions on the bag, followed them to a tee, I expect to see a blade or two sprout up with in the seven day claim, but; Maybe not everywhere in my yard. Soil conditions vary in my large(two and a half house lots)yard. I am taking the advice(to heart) via applying the instructions/suggestion(s) on the bag, by adding lime to the soil in the parts of my yard where the ph level(s) tested low I expect to see the desired result(s) suggested. In time I may report the results, for I've only started spreading this product. Comment: As I read other reviews(prior to purchase) I feel it is clear many unsatisfied users may NOT have understood the instructions, or may have failed to realize all the suggestions may not apply to there area or market. At 5,280 ft. "PENNINGTON/ANNUAL RYE-GRASS/GRASS SEED" may not be the right product for them, In my market, at the time; This was the only product available, therefore; I realized when I purchased the product I would need to adjust the product accordingly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pennington Ryegrass Pennington Ryegrass works great on my lawn. My back yard is moderately shaded by 9 tall trees (6 deciduous and 3 coniferous). Until I used this ryegrass, I had a hard time growing grass around the water-saturated soil by my coniferous trees. This grass grows thick and green there, as well as the rest of my back yard which can get pretty dry in other spots. I seed very heavily, so it took me about three 50lb bags for a 1/4 acre. I did this to choke out the weed-like grass that was previously growing. If you have lawn conditions like mine, I highly recommend using Pennington's Ryegrass.
