Product Overview

Pennington Annual Ryegrass grass seed is ideal for the quick establishment of a temporary lawn. It is a throw-and-grow seed that can be planted without tilling or digging into the soil and destroying permanent ground cover already in place. Designed for temporary or seasonal lawns. It works in the winter months to provide greening and prevent erosion.
  • Fast germination for quick cover
  • Can be used for over-seeding dormant warm-weather grasses such as Bermuda and Zoysia to maintain a green lawn year round
  • Helpful in erosion control
  • Best for full sun to light shade (6-8 hours of sun per day)
  • Germinates in 5-10 days
  • Covers up to 2,000 sq. ft. for overseeding and approximately 1,000 sq. ft. for a new lawn
  • Not recommended for use in warm season lawns

Hi Frank, For Annual Ryegrass with a Scott’s TB Edgeguard Mini, use a setting of 14. For Overseeding, go over once and for Bare Areas, go over the seeded area twice. Thank you.

Chris, The actual height depends on the amount of sunlight the area receives and which region you're in. It should grow somewhere between 18-24 inches though. Thank you.

How does this fare with Zoysia?

Asked by AlohaOne September 10, 2020

Answer

Hi AlohaOne, Due to the shallow and dense root system of the Zoysia, planting Annual Ryegrass – or any other grass besides Centipede – will damage the Zoysia and will provide poor coverage with the Ryegrass. Thank you.

Hi Nick, If your Bermudagrass had trouble coming out of dormancy this spring, we recommend skipping the winter overseeding this year. You always want to make sure you give Bermudagrass lawns a break every couple of years so they can “heal” after having ryegrass grow through. If you choose to overseed this fall, we recommend using Annual Ryegrass only because it dies out faster and is less hardy than it’s perennial counterpart. This will cause less stress on your Bermudagrass. You will want to use 8 lbs. for 800 square feet, as the seeding rate is 10 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. Thank you!

What time of year should this be used?

Hi Rosemary, you'll have the most success planting Annual Ryegrass when temperatures are above 50 at night and below about 80 during the day. In Southern states, this is used for overseeding warm season lawns and is typically applied during September or October. Hope this helps!

can I apply it to my bermuda grass?

I do. Have for 5 years. Cut Bermuda short before seeding. In the spring, when the Bermuda starts up again the rye dies off

How long will this seed stay viable if I don't use all of it?

Hi Jbclem, Normally seed lasts two to three years after the sell by date with good storage conditions. It is best to store the seed in a cool, dry place where it does not reach above 85 degrees. The germination rate reduces as time passes and if stored improperly the germination percentage can drop quickly. Thanks!

My brother did the job without any experience. It looks awesome now. We didn’t water our front lawn for 5 years. After seeding it, it’s so green in 4 weeks. It’s easy!

Nearly full germination in 7 days. I pushed to get it planted before the rain even though it was going to be mid to high 70's. The only place it hasn't fully germinated yet is along the street and driveway where it's still hot during the day. I held the last pound of seed back to touch-up any problem areas so I have full and even coverage. I put 20-pounds on 4,000 SF of bermuda.

This is the first time I've ever used this seed. I am extremely pleased with the results. We aerated, put the seed out and watched it grow. The only water it got was when it rained. I wish my summer grass looked this good. It has never been this full and green. I'll definitely be putting it out again next fall.

Good germination. Awesome product
Customer review from pennington.com logo
I was lucky to have been chosen to try Annual Ryegrass FREE in exchange for my honest opinion. It came in the mail about 3 weeks ago. I never had the chance to seed our lawn the first week of receiving it because we were on vacation. When we came back our weather starts to feel like winter. It rained for days too. Our weather in Kentucky is so weird this year. We didn't have Fall, it went straight to being cold. I waited for few days to get the right weather to seed. Sadly, it didn't come so I decided to seed the lawn by just throwing it on areas that are grassless in front of our house, then on the side which needs it badly and some on the back. Guess what? After just few days, it came up and it started to look green. I was so surprised even if I didn't put in a ton of effort I still see a good outcome. I love this product. This is the first product I received from Viewpoints. Thank you for the opportunity to try it. I definitely recommend. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
