Q:Will this grow in November in the Pacific Northwest?
by|Nov 1, 2022
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Hello, this grass seed can be used in the Pacific Northwest. However for overseeding in the fall, we recommend you to allow about 45 days between overseeding and your growing region's expected first frost, so grass can germinate and establish well before cold hits. If you're unsure of that date, your local county extension agent can help. Thank you.

Q:If I put this down as directed, will the birds eat it?
    by|Aug 15, 2022

    Answer This Question

A:  Hi britman9. Thank you for shopping at The Home Depot. According to Pennington, the Tackifier should act like a blanket, hiding the seed. To be sure that the birds do not discover your newly lain seed, I would cover the seeded area with about 1/8th. inch of a good quality topper and keep the area damp as directed by the Pennington Smart Patch Bermuda Grass seed instructions. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance. Rick_HD_OC

        Waste of money
I followed the directions to a tee. Watered twice a day or more and not a blade of grass grew. A total waste of time! Very disappointed… Wish I could get a refund. It has been over a month now since I used this on my bare patches.

Hello! We do apologize you've had difficulties with germination. Depending on your region, planting a cool season grass like Tall Fescue in the summer is typically not recommended due to the high temperatures. Easy to use
Grass seed in a smart package. There is a bit of material other than grass seed in this bag. The mix is designed to fix patches in the yard from whatever may have caused them. I'm using it to fill in a few spots where we had winter material stacked outside - and a few locations where the dogs have killed the grass. The pellet material in this mix seems to hold moisture much longer than the surface of a lawn. As long as the land you are patching is level, it should be fine. Keep it watered for a few days and green sprouts will appear - then the makings of grass and eventually a nicer lawn.

It grew grass where grass never grows...will it last?
I have an area in my backyard that hasn't had grass for several years. It is the first 20 or so feet next to my house, under a large tree, and next to my deck. The area gets almost no direct sunlight in the summer and the grass had died and been replaced by moss. This year I killed the moss, dug it out and disposed of it, tilled up the area, and then brought in 2 yard of new clean dirt. I used this dense shade mix because even before the moss I had never been able to grow enough grass to get it to hold. Typically after a few weeks I had less than 50% coverage and by 8 weeks all the grass had died again. This year I have gotten over 80% coverage after about 3 weeks and I went ahead and overseeded with another bag! I am so happy with the coverage right now as you can see in the photo. I will add the caveat that this could all end up dying, but the results so far are not only positive, but are in another league compared to my past efforts. If this grass holds all year I will be over seeding with this again in the future! Great product that worked wonderfully to at least begin growing for me!

          Good product for easy patching
I picked this up for some spots I have in my front yard (mostly sun) and my back yard (mostly shade). I know purists will say to buy high quality seed with no extras and then do your own amendments, mulching, and fertilizing, but I wanted a quick and easy solution for the small areas I had. This stuff has a large amount of inert ingredients (not seed) due to the water retaining and seed holding mulching, the fertilizers, and the seed coating they add, but if used properly you will get grass growth. It is pricey, but it works (mostly, more below) and is super easy. I gave this product 4 stars and would recommend it, but I have one issue. I got grass to grow in every place I needed it except for one. In my front yard a 5" by 18" strip next to my driveway only grew a handful of blades and those have now died. Everywhere else I planted it, including a 5" by 12" spot that was on the same driveway edge and about 12" away, grew great and is now filled. The shady part in the back came in a little thinner, but has started to thicken up, and the other 3 spots in the front have done great, but I have one stubborn spot. I can't figure out the issue and it likely isn't this product, but it basically claims it will grow anywhere and that wasn't quite true for me.

          Great product
This product is awesome. Just toss it out on bare spots and water regularly and within 5-7 days it’s growing. The seed is encased in a mulch product. It doesn’t wash away from rain or normal watering. It kind of swells up when it gets wet and stays in place. Easy to use and great results. This product works and is easy to use and that’s a great combination.

          Not impressed
I have a big shade tree that prevents the grass for growing underneath. I figured that this seed might do the trick. After three weeks of watering diligently, all that came up was some "peach fuzz" in a few small areas. I had taken some before and after photos hoping to show a miraculous difference but there was none. Maybe is would work better in a climate other than South Florida.

Hello! Dense Shade grass seed products are intended for shaded areas that get two to four hours of sunlight a day. If the area gets less than two hours of sunlight a day, it will be difficult to get grass to grow. There can also be soil or moisture issues when seeding under a dripline of a tree, due to the tree roots but this is dependent on the type of tree. pennington

          Good
I put this smart patch sun shade mix down just about two weeks ago now. Today I just started seeing the new grass hairs coming up. NY has had a cold spring so I think it took a little longer for it to start coming in but I can really see it now. I have one spot it doesn't seen to be growing in but seems to be in others. It has a fertilizer mixed in with the seed to help it grow. I still can't say how well it is going to come in its to early to say.

          Good
I put this Dense shade grass seed down probably just about two weeks ago now. I started to think it wasn't going to grow since I wasn't seeing any growth at all. Finally today I can see little grass hairs coming up. I live on Long Island NY and we have been having a pretty cold start to spring. We just started getting warmer days & nights & some rain and now I see the grass growing. Time will still tell how well it fully comes in & if it last. But so far I would recommend this seed.

          Easy to Use
The Pennington 5 lbs. Smart Patch Bermuda grass seed with mulch and fertilizer is super easy to use. I had an area in my yard where crab grass has started. After removing the crab grass, it left a bare area. I used the Pennington smart patch to fill in the spot. It is easy to apply with just three steps. Loosen the soil, apply the Pennington smart patch and water. According to the manufacturer, you can see the results as soon as one week. I was expecting all the grass seed to germinate at once, but I guess depending on the seeds depth and warmth, it germinates randomly. My patch area has some grass a week old and still new grass sprouting. It's a great product and easy to use.

          It Works
I took three pictures of my grass. It is still growing where I seeded but it is very hard to see where I seeded. You do not need starter fertilizer since this contains fertilizer. The mulch hides the seeds so birds don't see it. Remember to keep the area moist and lightly water the area. If it is very sunny water the area twice. Seed after cutting your lawn and wait mowing until the seeds are grow approx 3 inches.
