This 1.75 lbs. bag covers up to 5,000 sq. ft. for overseeding an existing lawn and 2,500 sq. ft. for starting a new lawn from scratch. Growing a lawn from ordinary Bermudagrass seed can require a lot of patience. At Pennington, we underset and you want beauty and results without the wait. Thanks to innovation and seed technology, Pennington Smart Seed Bermudagrass plus Fertilizer will give you twice the results and coverage compared to Bermudagrass alone. Questions & Answers

I live in Phoenix Arizona is this the right seed if not what is
ByDec 22, 2024

Answer This Question

Yes Bermuda will work in Phoenix during the warm season. Bermuda is a warm season grass that like hot temps. Plant when your nights do not drop below 65 and your days are 75+. Thank you for your question.

Will this grass grow under pine trees?
    ByNov 1, 2024

    Answer This Question

Smart Seed Dense Shade is best planted during the spring and/or fall, when the daytime temperatures are between 70 to 75 degrees and no lower than 50 degrees at night. This grass seed product should be planted in areas that get two to four hours of sunlight per day. Thanks!

Hello, Is this a GMO seed? I've been happy with the product in the mid-Atlantic for several years in a shaded area (no direct sun), except that I've had to replant after each hot summer (no watering). Great growth when planting in early October. Thanks,

what do you recommend for a fast growing seed to establish a new lawn to pass final inspection? I hate to spend the money on an annual rye grass if there's a more permanent option. I'm located central east coast Florida. thank you

        Answer This Question

We would recommend speaking to someone at your local garden center or Agricultural Extension Office for assistance. We suggest you have your soil tested first. Your local County Extension Office can do this for you and then make recommendations upon your soil. Thank you.

What is the best seed to last thru winter weather
          ByOct 15, 2024
          1 Answer |
          Answer This Question

Thank you for your question. Any of the cool season grasses, Perennial Rye, one of the fescues or Kentucky Bluegrass will survive winter temps if planted and established before the cold weather arrives. Annual Rye will last one season. The best time to plant any of these is about 45 days before you expect your first frost. This gives the grass time to establish a strong root system to carry it through the cold months. Temperatures 65-75 day time and not dropping below 50 at night.

This bag of bermuda grass seed is mixed 50/50 with Chewings Fescue grass seed. Fescue is not recommended for bermuda grass lawns. Why is the Chewings Fescue used in this mix?
            ByOct 1, 2024
            1 Answer |
            Answer This Question

We are sorry to hear that you had issues when planting the grass seed. Our seed is rigorously tested for both germination and weed control to ensure that it is only high- quality grass seed in our products. The fescue (germination as early as 5-14 days) is used as a companion grass to come up and hold the soil in place to give the Bermuda time to germinate (up to 30 days. Spread seed in area susceptible to erosion. Put down some potting soil first and rototilled into existing hard pack soil. Kept watered for about two weeks and grass is now growing. Either I missed a few spots or something went array since there are a few bald spots.

                  New Grass Is Growing
I purchased this grass seed to grow some burned spots in my grass in the backyard. I raked the burned, dead grass, put down the seeds, put the jiffy seed fertilizer and then top soil on top and watered the grass daily for 5 days. Within a week I could see the new grass. Glad to have good results. I plan to seed the entire backyard.

Buyer Beware for SoCal...Don't Waste Your Money...and WATER!
Unfortunately, I am forced to give this seed a one star. I do not recommend Pennington Smart Seed Bermudagrass. My gardener planted it in Southern California in October 2023. The winters here are mild and it doesn't get below freezing. The grass was doing very well on March 9. (I have attached photo from that date as well as current photos.) We purchased three 8.75 lb bags of the seed, paid our gardener to prep soil and plant...and of course watered to germinate and establish the grass. (It was not an inexpensive project by any means.) I am very dissatisfied with the results. The grass has died, except for a small area where it receives some shade from the hot California sun. Apparently this grass seed does not tolerate the hot, full sun of SoCal although the seed package indicates that it will. The "ideal planting zone" on the package covers quite a large area-nearly half the country-one size does not fit all. And it is ludicrous that the Pennington representative suggested we should have planted it in the spring to early summer-I would agree if we were in one of those states that experience freezing winter temperatures-but not in SoCal. If we had planted in the spring, I don't believe the young blades would have survived the direct sun better than grass already established from the fall. Thus, I don't feel this particular seed is suited for SoCal and should not be marketed for use in this part of the country. And, as I stated above, I already contacted a Pennington representative. She suggested we plant again next March-June. We will plant again, but we will not be using Pennington seed.

                      Grew extremely well
Planted last August, 2023 during the drought that Summer and Fall. Mulched with straw and watered often. Came up great and survived the winter and is now lush and dark green without fertilizer. (see picture)

The bare spots in my front yard have been covered up quickly thanks to this product. The before/after pictures speak for themselves. The results you see were after only 13 days! Water and rain helped my cause along with a little potting soil on top of seeds.

                          Never Again
Same as a lot of other comments. Seeded Lawn, watered daily, 2+ weeks and nothing. The seeds literally faded from green to white and are still there after 3 weeks. Bags says "Guaranteed to Grow" or your money back so I hope I can get a refund. Luckily, I only bought one bag to test it out. ** If you look at the picture I posted, the white rice looking things in the bare dirt is the grass seed thats been in my yard for two weeks **
