Q:I want to replace the CFL lights I have with these Philips LED lights. Do I need to remove the ballast in the CFL circuit?

        Answer This Question

A:  This LED bulb requires operation with a compatible ballast. It is not a ballast bypass or direct wire bulb.

Q:I believe this is compatible with the CFL recessed downlights I have. However the description says dimmable - not dimmable with the CFL ballast that came with those fixtures. So if you want dimming you have to replace all the ballasts, correct?

A:  I believe you have to remove the ballast and then connect the wires directly that come from the fixture to those that were going into the ballast. That’s where I’m at now.

I bought these to replace the compact fluorescent bulbs currently in the recessed lighting in my kitchen. In the long run I plan to have an electrician replace them with LED fixtures, but for now, these are an inexpensive compromise. I’ve only replaced one so far (I’m replacing them as the old CF bulbs go out) but it was an easy fit and works perfectly. The only drawback is that the bulb is a bit longer than the CF bulb was, so it extends slightly below the “can,” making it a bit too bright for looking directly at it. It’s a small issue, though, and the only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars. If you’re looking to move from CF bulbs to LED bulbs without the cost of replacing the fixtures, these are the way to go. I had them delivered to my home, and the package arrived on time, well packed, and without any damage.

Bulbs do just what they advertise. Remove old CFL using a paint can opener and plug in the new LED. Some give a slight delay in starting but they brighten up quickly and the old ballast works fine.
