I have a 4 bulb fixture in which all 4 fluorescent bulbs work. When I replace with these Philips LED bulbs, only 2 bulbs work and 2 do not. What could be the problem? I've tried switching the position of bulbs and have the same result. Am I going to have to modify the original fixture? It's something I was trying to avoid, hence purchasing the "universal fit" LEDs.
Asked by: CB
Philips Lighting, While I appreciate your answering my initial question, I did check the ballast compatibility guide first. My fixture was not listed, but I wasn't surprised. It is from a smaller New Jersey manufacturer, not a large company. Hence, I gave the bulbs a try.

In some low-rated reviews, people said that these did not work with their existing ballasts. Is there a list of compatible ballasts? How can I know if these will work with my existing florescent ballasts or not?

Philips 32-Watt T8/ 40-Watt T12 4 ft. Linear Replacement Universal Fit LED Tube Light Bulb Cool White (4000K) (2-Pack) is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 307.

We have three fluorescent fixtures in our kitchen, and these bulbs seemed like ideal replacements: very long life and lower power consumption. I installed them and was extremely pleased... for about half an hour, when there was a loud POP! and one of the fixtures went dead. It turns out that my fixtures are old enough that they don't have electronic ballasts, and these bulbs cause them to overheat to the point where the thermal protection switch trips. (After the ballast cooled down, I put the old bulbs back and it worked, so no damage was done.) So now I'm back to traditional fluorescent tubes until I can get to the point of replacing the fixtures, which won't happen until I do a more general remodeling. The Philips LED tubes will end up in the fairly new shop lights over the laundry area, where they should work fine... so it isn't a total loss. I'm disappointed, but can't necessarily blame the product. The moral of the story: check your fixtures to make sure they don't have magnetic ballasts before buying these bulbs.

The color temperature matches closely to "soft white" incandescents. (3000K as compared to 2700K) The CRI is said to be 80 but it is definitely much better than a fluorescent tube with (supposedly) the same CRI. I'm replacing the fluorescents in a commercial building's restrooms and starting to replace all the old fixtures is not really an option at this point. This is a really good work-around. There is one cloud on the horizon and I would almost mark the rating down a star about this: One set of tubes overheated in one fixture and shut off. I let them cool down and turned them back on. So far, they are working fine now. If they go out again, I will assume I got a bad tube or two and try replacing them. It could also be that the old ballast is on its last legs. With 3 other identical fixtures working fine, I don't think this is a problem with the product itself. One note: Some people have complained about the color of the light being "yellow" although it is called "Bright White". The term "Bright White" indicates a color temperature of 3000K. Read the specs before you buy the product, guys!

We found out about these tubes from talking to a very helpful & knowledgeable Home Depot associate. This is really a 5-star product that we rated 4-stars due to cost ($8.80 per tube). For OUR installation, this was a truly "plug & play" experience, i.e., NO ballast removal, NO re-wiring of the fixture, etc. Just remove the old tubes and install these new tubes. We have numerous 30-year old fluorescent fixtures (with magnetic ballasts) in our home that use both 4-ft and 2-ft T-12 (1-1/2") tubes. A few years ago, we purchased a diferent brand LED product that worked, but the tubes "hum" when turned on. These Philips 4-ft T-8 (1") tubes due NOT "hum" at all. The 5000K Daylight temperature is a bright white light, which we like, but some folks may prefer a "softer, warmer" color (e.g., 4000K or 3000K temp). Excellent product, highly recommended.

I had T12 fixture so I was worried to use InstantFit T8 tubes since that will entail changing the tombstones (all 4 of them, what a pain!) 2. I had a "AmbiStart RELB-2S40-N" in the fixture ... So I was thnking I will have to schange that into a IOPA-2P32-N means a lot of rewiring... HomeDepot associate said "Take this 1. It fits T12 and T8 so no need to change the tombstone 2. this works even with magnetic ballest let alone your older-model electroic ballast. We have ZERO returns on them" He is correct. I jsut replaced the two lamps and Voila it works.

I have a kitchen light with 4 T8 tubes. 1 burned out. I had GE 5000K, 2850 Lumen florescent bulbs that I wanted to match. I did quite a bit of research and decided to give these a try. When I put them in, at first I thought they weren't quite as bright as the florescents. However, when I put the frosted cover back on the difference disappeared. I don't think anyone looking at the fixture can tell the difference. I will replace the other 2 florescent ones soon. I've attached a picture. The 2 florescent bulbs are on the left and the new LEDs on the right.

The bulbs were very easy to install in an existing fluorescent fixture without any rewiring. My only complaint was the color of the light. I purchased daylight but these had a definite blue tint. It was very noticable in comparison to the light from LED daylight bulbs that I had in the same room. The package that I bought had been opened so there is a chance that the wrong bulbs were in it, but the HD clerk assured me that the product had not been tampered with.

These bulbs do a great job in my basement, and are brighter than the original fluorescent bulbs. We currently only use 2 bulbs in each fixture instead of 4 with ample brightness as shown in the picture below. Normal fluorescent bulbs have that terrible color, and cheaper LEDs have that bluish color, but these are a much more pleasing color.

We wanted a "warm" light, 3,000 Kelvin or less, so that evening exposure to the light will not reset our circadian rhythms and keep us awake at night. This is a definite improvement over our old fluorescent tubes. Lighting labels should also list the CRI (Color Rendering Index) in addition to the other information. Please add the CRI to lighting to the labels.
