It could but you'd want to get a test kit to know how much. You can use the Trouble Free Pools app in your browser to know exactly how much to add after you test the water.

The application rate is based off your results from testing the water! I’d purchase some of their test strips so you know what your dealing with. Download the app and you simply match the colors from the test strip and it will tell you what chemical or chemicals are off balance and directions to treat it. I’m not sure of its exact impact on chlorine and alkalinity? But from what I’ve researched, until you have your water balanced as in the correct ph parameters, it will effect all the other chemicals! They have a step program, first step is testing water, and second is balancing it through adjusting the ph to I think the 6-7 range, and from there you chlorinate and everything else! You have to have step 2 correct in order to adjust step 3 and so on!

This item is not very potent and also lowers Total Alkalinity too fast. I bought it because our local Home Depot tends to not stock fresh Muriatic Acid or Chlorine. Chlorine is 45-60 days old, acid is 3+ months old.

Response from Pool Time SupportSeptember 9, 2020
Hi Zurak, We are the manufacturer of Pool Time products. We appreciate your feedback about our pH Down product. pH and Total Alkalinity are related. When one's pH is low, often their Total Alkalinity is low as well. Conversely, when one's pH is high, their Total Alkalinity is often high as well. We recommend balancing your pool's Total Alkalinity first, and then making the necessary adjustments to the pH. If you would like help troubleshooting your pool's water balance, or have other pool care questions or concerns, please give us a call at 1-800-252-POOL (7665). Thank you. PoolTime

There are lots of components to maintaining pool chemicals. Water conditioner, chlorine, and ph levels are my 3 main components. To maintain chlorine levels, you'll need to compliment water conditioner levels (Br, bromine), and ph levels has to be balanced at 7.6 for everything to be effective. PH Up did the trick to bring up the ph levels when it's too acidic. Follow the instructions and pour it into a bucket of water to completely dilute before dumping it into the pool. A little goes a long way.
