With new grass and seeding difficult spots with clay, what ratio should I mix peat moss, soil, and seed or do I layer?
      BySep 2, 2024
      1 Answer |
      Answer This Question

For new grass seeding in difficult clay spots, it's generally recommended to amend the clay soil with peat moss to improve its texture and drainage. You don't necessarily need to mix peat moss, soil, and seed in a specific ratio. Layering can be a more effective approach. Here's a suggested method: 1. **Prepare the area:** Loosen the existing clay soil to a depth of about 6 inches. Remove any rocks or debris. 2. **Amend the soil:** Spread a 2- to 4-inch layer of peat moss over the loosened clay. Work it into the clay soil using a garden fork or tiller. This will help break up the heavy clay and improve drainage. 3. **Add topsoil (optional):** If your existing soil is very poor, you can add a thin layer of topsoil over the peat moss mixture. This will provide additional nutrients for the new grass seedlings. 4. **Sow the seeds:** Scatter grass seed evenly over the prepared area according to the seed package instructions. 5. **Lightly cover the seeds:** Rake a very thin layer of peat moss or topsoil over the seeds. This will help keep them moist and protect them from birds. 6. **Water gently:** Water the seeded area thoroughly but gently to avoid washing away the seeds. Keep the soil consistently moist until the grass seedlings emerge.

How much peat moss should be added to potting soil for growing vegetables and plants?
      ByAug 26, 2024
      1 Answer |
      Answer This Question

The ideal ratio of peat moss to potting soil for vegetables and plants depends on the specific plant's needs and your existing soil conditions. Generally, peat moss is used as a soil amendment to improve drainage, aeration, and moisture retention, not as a primary growing medium. For **seed starting**, a mix with a higher percentage of peat moss is often recommended, such as a 50/50 mix of peat moss and perlite or vermiculite. This provides a loose, well-draining medium that allows for good root development. For **container gardening**, a general guideline is to mix 1 part peat moss to 2 or 3 parts potting soil. This helps to lighten heavy soils and improve drainage while still providing essential nutrients. For **amending garden soil**, the amount of peat moss needed will depend on the soil's texture and drainage. A soil test can help determine the appropriate amount. A general guideline is to add 1 to 2 inches of peat moss to the top layer of soil and incorporate it to a depth of 6 to 8 inches. It's important to note that peat moss is acidic, so it can lower the pH of your soil. If you're growing plants that prefer a neutral or alkaline pH, you may need to adjust the pH after adding peat moss.

How’s the texture and particle size? Is it light and fluffy like Miracle Grow Sphagnum Moss? Thanks!
      ByAug 2, 2024
      1 Answer |
      Answer This Question

This product contains organic sphagnum peat moss. While I can't compare its texture directly to another brand, customer reviews often describe peat moss as having a light and fluffy texture. It's important to note that the texture can vary slightly depending on moisture content.

Can Peet Moss be used to fill in the ground holes made by rodents possibly Chipmunks and would it depose of them without using poison? Tha
      ByJun 21, 2024
      1 Answer |
      Answer This Question

I cannot recommend using peat moss to deter rodents or fill their holes for that purpose. While filling the holes might be a temporary fix, it won't address the underlying issue of why the rodents are there. They may simply dig new holes. Additionally, there's no evidence to suggest that peat moss itself would harm or deter rodents. For rodent control, consider other methods like traps or deterrents.

      Contains wood chips
I've used peat moss many times and this is not straight pear moss. There are lots of wood chips in it an it feels sandy. I'm worried my seeds won't do well in the mix I just made with this. Very disappointed and won't buy it again.

Has to be the best peat moss we have ever used & we go through many many bag each planting season here in Denver. Plus just a great product to help amend our soil that has way too much clay. Best feature of this product that it is truly made of good fresh ingredients & not ground up dust that never holds moisture which is key to a good peat moss. Already need to purchase more since we used this product in all our planting along with amending existing flower beds that had become hardened with that darn clay. Great product!!
