The Emsco Group RESCUE 50 Gal. Grey Flat Back Whiskey Rain Barrel features an integrated planter and an easy-to-install, patented downspout diverter kit. The diverter kit fits 2 in. x 3 in. standard or 3 in. x 4 in. high capacity downspouts. The downspout diverter will route water to the rain barrel when raining and bypass the rain barrel when full. This rain barrel kit collects rainwater to be both environmentally-friendly and cost effective by reducing your dependence on municipal or well water. The diverter system does not have to be removed during the winter season and can be by passed so that water flows through the downspout as usual, keeping water from getting into the rain barrel and freezing. The integrated planter can be planted into directly or a pre-arranged floral basket can be used to adorn the top of the rain barrel.

I am not sure if the barrel itself is safe for plant consumption but I know I have asphalt shingles and would not want to take water run off from those into my garden.

are they set up to connect multiple barrels to each other so when one fills up it begans to fill the other
I don’t know ,however I DO know that if you don’t drain it before winter it WILL freeze and split.
No, they are not set up to do that. But hypothetically you could simply drill a hole in the side of the unit lower than where the water enters the first unit and run a second pipe to the second unit. Once it is full it would back feed into the first unit. One thing to note is they may be flat back but mine bulges substantially out when full.

They are not "set up" that way, however it would be easy to connect them with the supplied tubing by simply cutting a hole at the top of the opposite side of the inlet tube in the first barrel.
