18V SubCompact Brushless Cordless 1/2 in. Impact Wrench (Tool Only)

The RIDGID 18V subcompact ½ impact wrench is lightweight with a small footprint, but still has a strong punch with a 225 ft/lbs of breakaway torque. I used it to take the tires off of a truck and car, and the breakaway of the lug nuts was quick and easy. I also used it to install TV wall-mounts and it worked like a charm. You need to use impact rated sockets so that they don’t break. One cautionary point is to check with your hand or with a torque wrench after fastening the lug nuts with the wrench. I needed to apply 90 lb-ft torque on the lug nuts, so I did some of it manually. What I really like about this impact wrench is how lightweight and small it is, making it very convenient to carry around and not causing fatigue.

This subcompact impact wrench is a life saver when you have to loosen nuts and bolts in tight places. I just rebuilt the turbo on my Chevy Duramax LBZ diesel truck and it was invaluable in loosening the bolts on the up-pipes that connect the exhaust manifolds to the back of the turbocharger. There are four speed settings including an ‘auto’ mode. The speed settings are 0-850, 2100, 2800 progressively controlled by how much the trigger is being pressed. The impact driver can deliver up to 3,800 impacts per minute at 250 ft-lbs of torque. One feature that I found very helpful is the three LED lights that are built into the drive head. These illuminate the work area and were very helpful when I was working at the back of the turbo and in the truck’s wheel wells where I couldn’t actually see some of the bolt heads I was trying to loosen. The tool comes with a belt hook however since I was using it in a confined space, I didn’t add it so I could get maximum clearances. With a typical ¾” impact socket mounted on the anvil, the tool measures about 5 ½” long. For tightening the fasteners, it is difficult to state exactly how much torque each of the four speed modes will deliver as it depends on the size of the fastener. The manual recommends tightening at the lowest speed and then measuring the tightness using a torque wrench. As a result, I just used a torque wrench to retighten the bolts in the manifolds and turbo as I needed no more than 39 ft-lbs and didn’t want to accidentally shear any of the new bolts I was using due to their inaccessible locations. As I was working on manifold and turbo bolts that hadn’t been removed before and had gone through multiple heat cycles over the past 17 years, I pre-soaked the bolts using a spray on lubricant for 24 hours before I tried to loosen them and this seemed to help the impact driver as they all came loose without shearing off. Since I own 18V power tools from different brands, I use a battery adapter that lets me use a single brand of 18V battery with all the brands of power tool. I find this cuts down on the number of batteries and chargers that are laying around the workshop and allows me to just use one type of battery with all my 18V tools and allows me to get the ‘tool only’ versions without having to worry about whether I have a battery I can use with it. The battery adapter I have for Ridgid brand tools worked fine with this impact wrench. This tool comes with Ridgid’s 3 year warranty and optional Lifetime Service Agreement. To qualify, you have to open a Ridgid online account, register the product within the first 90 days after purchase and this will warranty the anvil, switches, gear sets and other parts of the tool including a limited battery warranty for the lifetime that you own it. If you don’t have a receipt, the warranty will run from the date of manufacture using the serial number. The serial number for this impact wrench is on a decal on the bottom of the tool where the battery slides in.

Fits that missing niche in my Ridgid lineup. Added a LaBear 3/8" Drive to 1/4" Hex Drive Quick Change Impact Adapter to round out the capabilities.

I used this to do the pads and rotors on my vehicle. It had no issue at all from start to finish and I love the new location of the lights compared to the older model subcompact. I highly recommend this tool for anyone on the fence about it. Just do it. I’m newer to the ridgid line but so far they are all pretty impressive and this tool is no exception!
