Questions & Answers

What type of gas is used

Asked by: Pat
Never, never, never use a 50/1 mix. Doing so will reduce the life of the motor by about 75%. I am 70 years old. Been using chainsaws all my life for firewood and tree removal. It was the EPA that mandated the 50/1 mix to chainsaw manufacturers in order to totally eliminate smoke, or at least reduce it to a bare minimum. But think about it. When chainsaws were first invented back in the 1940's or so, the fuel to oil mix was 16/1. That's a cup of oil (30 wt. non-detergent motor oil, not so -called fancy shmancy 2-cycle engine oil ) per gallon of gas. And the motors were only doing about 8000 rpm's. Today the motors are screaming along at 10,000-11,000 rpm's, yet the lubrication from the oil in the fuel has not been increased to handle the huge increase in speed, heat and friction, but unbelievably has actually instead been reduced to about a third of what it used to be. Ask any older chainsaw repairman, like Ike in Gonzales, LA. They will tell you to never use less that a ratio of 32/1, i.e., 4 oz's of oil/gal. of non-ethanol fuel. Sure there will be a little smoke. In fact there had better be some smoke. If not, you are prematurely wearing out the motor. Just look at the new Chinese-made chainsaws on the market now. They are racing along at 13-000 rpm's. But the recommended fuel mix is 25/1. That's how they do it. My old Poulan-made Craftsman saw is 60 years old, but still runs, original 16/1 motor. Just thought you guys ought to know.

The engine is getting too lean at high RPMs. Either the mixture is off, or the diaphragm is worn out.

How long does the chain stay sharp? Is it a good quality chain or should it be upgraded to an Oregon chain? Some small c

Asked by: Bob
I cut down (3) 30' trees and the chain is now smooth like a butter knife. It won't cut hair... It also began popping off, even as I began cutting with a tight chain.
