Great Saw, Cuts Well
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a great saw and comes with a lot of great features. Very well thought-out, I love that the scabbard not only sheaths the bar and chain but the bucking spikes as well. The bucking spikes are plastic not metal which is part of the reason this saw lost a star. The handle is a little slick and does not have much traction. This chainsaw has an actual hand guard chain brake, the other Ryobi chainsaws that I have used lacked this feature. There was plenty of space between my knuckles and the chain brake, unlike anothet Ryobi chainsaw, so I was not constantly scraping my hand against it. This chainsaw also lacks a tool free tensioning system, I prefer that over the scrench because no matter what I am always able to tighten the chain, whereas with the scrench if I drop it or lose it, then I am out of luck until I find a replacement. This came with the rapid charger which is good, to me the chink in Ryobi's 40v line has always been the looooooong recharge times. The rapid charger charged my 5.0 Batt in about an hour, compared to about 6hrs with a regular charger. I used this to cut up a log and branches in the yard and this did a good job, this has a load sensing system so as it came across harder surfaces it picked up the speed. The chain brake worked right away, stopping the chain just about immediately. Whereas when you simply release the trigger it took about 3 seconds for it to stop . The carrying case work a great as well. I have about 10 battery operated chainsaws that I mainly use for storm debris removal, this will not be goto saw but will definitely be my #2 The manual is very informative Suggestion: Metal Spikes, an on board fuel Gauge, an LED( for storm cleanups when power is lost also, for the end of the day work when the day gets away from you and darkness falls)

I was always a gas powered chainsaw user as a homeowner, since I didn't think we were there yet with battery powered ones. I am totally wrong. This 18 inch Chainsaw worked comparable to my gas powered Craftsman chainsaw It was fun to compare when I first was a bit skeptical. The look and weight was comparable, so that was okay, since the 40v battery does have some weight to it but with good sufficient power. I found it cut thru some dried logs with good size chips, and when it came to harder woods like Crepe Maple the shavings were smaller. That is okay. The battery can be used on your other ryobi 40v products, so it works with my weed wacker too. Great. It did well and had very good power which did surprise me, and I think that can also be contributed to the brushless motor of this chainsaw, that is a big plus. There is a tool wrench that hides at the end of the handle, which makes it convenient as well, that it does rattle around in the plastic case and you have it handy. Nice plus there too. I found it to charge very fast and quiet. So for a kit this is great, an excellent chainsaw, battery, charger, and carrying case. This carrying case is also well made and comparable to my gas powered saw case. Let me tell you that I also experienced fantastic customer service, when I was having problems with the first one, they contacted me, troubleshooted and sent me a replacement right away. That is customer service and they kept in touch all along. Very important for this customer service and the following it generates. I'm looking to expand my Ryobi collection too because of this high level of customer service. Overall, really like this product, works well like a gas powered, and my customer service experience was excellent. To me it is comparable to gas powered chainsaw wthout the problems of gas mixing and carburetor problems with todays ethanol laced gasoline.

Doesn't stink from 2-cycle pre-mix!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Isn't as loud as 2-cycle chainsaws either! And I don't have to drag a cord a couple hundred feet like my electric saw. Plenty of power from the 40V HP system. I took down a 10 inch and and 8 inch tree then trimmed and cut up the 10 inch till I was down to brush before the battery wore out. Comes with carrying case and integrated scabbard. Used about 3/4 of the chain oil in two battery charges. Many features to reduce kickback risk. It is no lumberjacking tool but is great for my occasional landowner use.

Wonderful chainsaw because it is just the right weight for me, even with the battery. Some of the others that I have used have been way too heavy, which poses a safety issue. I don't have any experience cutting large trees, but for cutting small maples and other "nuisance" trees, this chainsaw is ideal. I have also used it to cut some pressure-treated wood when I replaced some stairs in my garden area. Worked just fine. I haven't used it for long periods of time, so the battery has worked out well and I have had no need to purchase a backup. Interestingly enough, one of the things I like about this particular chainsaw is its carrying case. It is well-built and easy to get the saw in and out without any problems. The saw in particular also appears to be very durable. I don't plan to use it on a regular basis, so it should last me for many years. One caveat. Remember to pick up some lube and chain oil before using the chainsaw. I forgot to do that prior to using it the first time, so had to make a special trip to HD to pick some up before I got started with my project.

After years of using a traditional chainsaw we decided to give a battery operated one a try. We got the RYOBI 18 in. 40-Volt HP Brushless Lithium-Ion Electric Cordless Chainsaw that included a 5ah battery and charger. I can’t lie we were a little skeptical about how much power a battery operated one would have. We could not have been more pleased! This combo had everything we needed as we do not have any other 40 volt items we liked the fact that it had a charger and battery in it. This unit has some really nice features built into it. For instance as the pictures I attached show you can check your oil level without having to open up the reservoir it has a window that shows it very clearly. It also has an opening to be able to hang the chainsaw up when not in use if desired. There is onboard storage for the included tool that you use to adjust the chain. The chain adjustment is very easy and you do not have to open everything up to do it. The case is well made and I like that even though it has a blade cover there is another piece that is attached to the case that actually goes over it to keep it from lifting up. There is a pocket to keep all your paperwork in so that you never misplace it. The overall weight of this chainsaw was surprisingly light but yet it is very well balanced. Another thing I liked was it has a safety feature where if the brake is off you cannot turn on the chainsaw. So if for some reason it is not on you do not have to worry about an accident if you start it without the brake engaged. The chainsaw has plenty of power and cut through everything that we have tried it on! It is like using a hot knife on butter, it just goes right through. Had I known how quick and easy these cut I would have gotten one a long time ago. We constantly have trees to fell on our property in the country as we like to keep the area free of any fuel for wildfires and this is certainly going to earn its place as one of my favorite tools. Even with a set of messed up shoulders this makes my work easy and not as strenuous as our old gas powered one. There is also the fact that I never have to worry about having fuel on hand just a charged battery and some chain oil and I am good to go! Another great Ryobi tool that you will be glad you added to your collection!

Chainsaw arrived completely assembled and enclosed in a plastic case with a scabbard for the chain/bar. Also enclosed was the 5A battery and charger. It did not come with chain/bar oil so you will need to purchase before using the saw. According to the operation manual this cordless chain saw is designed for limbing and prune type cutting, as well as cutting small trees. This would be a nice saw for the homeowner, DIYer or handyman. I used mine to prune up some small trees including a couple of apple trees. The chain was sharp and the anti kickback made the cuts smooth and easy. The 40V 5A battery is much larger and heavier than some of the competition making the unit almost as heavy as a gas model. Auto oiler is nice feature but it does leak when not in use and stored away.

The perfect home owner chain saw
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The 18-in Ryobi 40 volt chainsaw is just what I needed. I have several log sections that the tree crew left a bit long for my insert. This chain saw made short work of the cuts I needed to make. Plenty of power to cut through. As with all tools don't force the tool, but let the tool do the work. This is so much quieter than a gas saw, you dont need to use hearing protection, or if you need to cut late into the night, you wont keep the neighbors up. You should still wear eye protection, leather work gloves, sturdy boots ( bonus for steel toe) and jeans or chain saw chaps. This will also come in handy in the middle of summer to do cean up at the in-laws cabbin when fire danger is stupid high. Unless you strike a rock or metal object, the 40v saw wont have same fire danger as a gas saw. You also wont have to mix gas anymore or clean out the carb. The bar oil window shows the current level of bar oil.The amount of bar oil dispensed is also adjustable with the included wrench that sits under the handle. The 40v battery charger has a cooling fan, and charges quicker than I expected. The charger has status led's that show status of battery when it is plugged in and charging. The saw is very easy to use and I am VERY happy with it.

This 18" cordless chainsaw arrived in a very sturdy plastic case. The blade also has a plastic cover which is great to keep it stored securely. You have to add oil before use. The saw has a mechanical chain brake with is nice. Right oiut of the gate feels like it has sufficent power that is comparable to a gas powered. This saw is much lighter than a gas powered and easier to use. It comes with one battery/charger but is interchangable with other Ryobi 40 volt.

My new favorite tool! I've not used a chain saw before as I have been uncomfortable with the whole gas powered tool idea (plus i could not yank that cord hard enough to get it started anyway) so when I heard there now are battery powered chainsaws I was eager to try one. It didn't seem like a battery could provide enough power for the work a chainsaw does but when this new 40v model came out I figured now was a good time to give it a try. This Ryobi product basically comes complete and ready to use. Includes storage box, battery and charger and the onboard "scwrench". Just add some chain bar oil and you're ready to go. We took it along to cut down our Christmas tree. Unfortunately oil leaked out all over the truck. The instructions say there will be some seepage but this pretty much dripped constantly. Then the chain slipped off while cutting. Ugh. Got home and cleaned it all up. Guess we didn't tighten the oil cap enough. I reinstalled and tightened the chain and was ready to give it another try. I tried it on some smaller firewood cuttings and was surprised at how easy it was to use. Next I limbed up one of our sequoia trees, so easy. I haven't tried it on any really large sized logs or trees but I have no doubt it will perform like a pro. So nice not to have to rely on someone's help when I can now cut what I need myself.
