I used mine in wet hard clay with a lot of fieldstones and it did fine. When you hit a rock the anti-kick feature will engage. Just pull up slightly and the auger does a great job bringing the rocks to the surface. I would say the average rock size from me was around 4-7 inches. Hope this helps!

300 ft of aluminum fence
Hey Guys, I was very skeptical about electric vs gas as I didn't think it would get the job done. I was wrong, this thing powered thru Georgia clay just fine. The battery lasted around 6 posts at a time but I had an extra 2 batteries from my blower.

Awesome tool to have! Will Dig right under a sidewalk for drainage pipes.
We use this tool to core under sidewalk to run drainage pipe. Since it is electric it will run sideways unlike gas power units of the past. Could not be happier. Saves hours of time.

Surpring power
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I'm not much of a Ryobi user and honestly I bought this tool thinking I might have to return it. But after one week of using it I'm impressed. The power is on par with a gas auger, it's extremely easy to use, and very durable. I dug several 32" deep holes with relative ease. I do still use a 2 handed post hole digger to extract the dirt, and I'm looking for a bit extension so I don't have to take the auger to the ground for our frost line requirements here. But it worked great battery life exceeded my expectations. Good job Ryobi. Only complaint is the anti-kickback is not that effective.

Great earth auger. Ryobi dosen't sell other augers but most augers and extentions with a 3/4" shaft will fit. I took 1 star off only because there is no way to adjust the safety clutch. This has a lot of power. When hitting a root or large rock you need to have a really good hold. If you have a second person to help hold it is much easier. I wouldn't hesitate to buy this again.

Super, super impressed...have reasonable expectations
I have to say i wasnt sure what to expect from this little auger but it wasn't great things. A battery powered one man auger? Its got to be a cash grab gimmick, right? Wrong. I dug 26 post holes 2’ deep on 3 battery charges (2 with the included 4ah battery and 1 with a 3ah battery i already owned). And i dont have good dirt. I have clay and rocks. This literally saved me hours of time and my body from hating me had i done this all with a manual post hole digger (which you will still need/want). Now you must have some reasonable expectaions...in my heavy, wet clay this thing would bog down about half way into the hole and I’d stop, reverse out and use the manual post hole digger to remove the dirt the auger chewed up. Then repeat the process. On the worst hole with tons of rocks i might have had to do this 4 times. On the few holes i had perfect loamy soil, the auger went right in the full 2’ on the first go. But that was the rarity. You’ll still want a small trenching shovel or long breaker bar to be able to dig out large rocks as this auger isnt going to take out any larger than a golf ball. And you’ll want a post hole digger to easily remove the debris made by the auger. If you’ve used a post hole digger/auger attatchment on a tractor before this isnt quite like that. A tractor unit feels almost unstoppable, but a tractor isn't always available or maneuverable enough to every location. With this unit there’s just no weight and control of the tractor behind it, just you and your arms and legs. I found that if you brace the handlebars with your legs as it gets about halfway you can take a bit more punishment from the machine when it hits rock. I also found it helpful that when i was in really heavy sticky clay where it would bog down at about the 1-1.5’ mark to actually pull up on the unit while going in the faster forward speed. That enables the auger to chew everything up instead of slicing through it and getting bogged down. It’ll take a little getting used to like every tool and i havent tried it in sandy soil or ice like another reviewer mentioned so ymmv. Overall, I’m extremely pleased with this purchase and have told a number of people that i wish i’d had this years ago. I plan on using this for trees, shrubs and bulb plantings and will be looking for different sized blades for more uses but its a thousand times better than any cordless drill auger and beats digging manually any day. Its a bit pricey but not compared to gas units and it does come with a 4ah battery. Id like to see Ryobi sell it as a “tool only” for those of us who already have some batteries in the 40v line. Other improvements they could do would be to figure out some sort of a kick stand or foldable legs attachment or something to prevent you from having to set it down in the dirt or lean it against something and risk it falling over. It’d probably just get in the way or be less effective on unlevel ground but its an annoyance i’d be curious if they could solve with a little R

RYOBI 40 Volt Battery Ground Auger with a 4 ah Battery In only 52 minutes 3 senior Boy Scouts were able to create 7 perfectly located and dug holes to a depth of 2.5 feet. It took considerably longer to place the gravel base, square the poles and mix and place the concrete. It turned out to be a quicker job to place the holes in the Mojave Desert clay and gravel ground than any of us thought would be possible. These were teens who had no previous experience placing fence posts. The holes were all placed as cleanly as the two pictured below. I must admit I, just as every other adult, were impressed with the performance of the Ryobi 40-volt 4 ah battery driven 8-inch ground auger. Most of the adults had all used post hole diggers, manual ground augers, or even gas power augers in this desert soil them selves, but we saw these boys operate this auger without any extra effort. The Desert is not the sand pit the world imagines. To real desert dwellers the clay and gravel is always a challenge for post holes and anchors. You can believe this Ryobi 40-volt Auger got real complements from experienced hole diggers.

The Ryobi cordless earth auger is just what I need to dig post holes for a wooden fence. I live is an area where the ground is heavy clay and filled with rocks so using an auger makes the job incredibly easy. I must admit since I am a small 73 year old woman I was reluctant to use it by myself. The whole unit is pretty heavy, but it is well balanced. My neighbor used it first and gave me the confidence to try it myself. Assembly is straightforward but I did find it easier to use a ratcheting wrench to tighten the bolts, rather than using the hand wrench included with the auger.

This Ryobi 40-volt earth auger is a well-made, powerful tool that can dig the 8" wide holes that I will need for adding fence posts without the need for electric cords or fuel. This tool can also be used to bore holes in ice or any holes needed for landscaping. It includes a 4Ah battery, battery charger, 8" bit with locking pin, the power head, handle assembly with 8 screws, nuts, 5mm hex key, and a 10mm flat wrench. There are also separate manuals for the tool, battery, and battery charger. ********** It requires assembly, but it is quick and easy to attach the handles with supplied screws, insert the bit with the locking pin, and attach the battery. It arrived very well protected with cardboard inserts inside the box of 33"x22"x10". It has a good weight, the power head alone weighs about 17 lbs. and the bit weighs about 12 lbs. Then the battery and handles add a few more pounds. (total weight during operation: 36.7 lbs.) ********** I like the anti-kickback mechanism that automatically stops the tool since our ground is rocky. The trigger switch with a lockout button and the speed/direction button are conveniently located on the right handle (options are forward-high, forward-low, and reverse). The grip on the handles are made of hard plastic and the distance from left to right handle is about 24". The head has a control panel on top with LED status lights to show if it is running, has a fault or overload, or is in active kickback condition. It is not too loud while running, but it does get heavy for senior after a while. There were only 2 minor dislikes: the bit is a little wobbly (I would have liked the locking pin to be a tighter fit) and the prongs for the battery charger were bent and had to be straightened. The bit is about 30" long. My ground is moist right now, so the bit did not have much trouble with the rocks and I had no problem going about 22" deep. I love this auger and it sure would have come in handy while planting all of our trees! I am hoping to find more bits in other sizes for this tool. *********** The battery (OP40404) is lithium-ion, 40-volt, 4.0Ah, and has LED status lights to show the amount of remaining power or errors. The battery charger (OP404VNM) is compact at about 3"x5"x1.5" and has LED lights to show the status of power, testing, errors, charging, or ready. It has a 6' power cord with a 2-prong plug. This tool is backed by a 5-year warranty and the battery has a 3-year warranty.

So much easier than doing it by hand! I have built fences for years for my self, family and as a job. Digging the post holes was always the worst part if you have to do it by hand. Gas powered augers work but they are noisy, smelly and will try to rip your arms off or smash your thigh if they catch on something. This unit has a surprising amount of power and anti kick back so it only bumps you for a second when you catch on a root or large rock. I found it easy to use by myself and the production rate is fantastic. There are two speed settings to adjust for soil conditions and the balance of the machine makes it comfortable to work with for extended periods. Just for fun as the new battery was charging I checked an older 40 volt battery I had and it was listed a compatible so I can hot swap if needed for extended working. It took me less time to did the holes for the new fence than it did to set the posts and mix the concrete.
