Q:How do you replace the chain
        by|Jul 28, 2023
        1 Answer
        Answer This Question

A:  Hello, Timm - Thank you for your question. Remove the bar nut (7/16 in.) and drive case cover. The bar contains a bar stud slot that fits over the bar stud. The bar also contains a chain tensioning pin hole which fits over the chain tensioning pin. Place the bar onto the bar stud so that the chain tensioning pin fits into the chain tensioning pin hole. Fit the chain over the sprocket and into the bar groove. The cutters on the top of the bar should face toward the bar tip, in the direction of the chain rotation. Replace the drive case cover and install the bar nut. Tighten the bar nut finger tight only. The bar must be free to move for tension adjustment. Remove all slack from chain by turning the chain tensioning screw clockwise, assuring that the chain seats into the bar groove during tensioning. Lift the tip of the bar up to check for sag. Release the tip of the bar, and turn the chain tensioning screw 1/2 turn clockwise. Repeat this process until sag does not exist. Hold the tip of the bar up and tighten the bar nut securely. Chain is correctly tensioned when there is no slack on the underside of the bar, the chain is snug, but it can be turned by hand without binding. I hope this helps! Additionally, if you need further support, then a RYOBI Customer Experience Professional is here for you, Monday - Friday from 9 am to 6 pm (EST) when you call or text us at 1.800.525.2579 or through email or live chat when you visit us at https://www.ryobitools.com/support/contact. I bought this one year ago. The day I got it work well. I never used again until today. Chain come off very easy, the chain cap is plastic so a plastic pin just broken. After used for one hour the chain just broke. I was cutting a small bush in my house. Garbage.

              Chain Defective
Used it less than 30 minutes if that long, chain fell out, reinsert and failed again. It appears one link in chain will not budge therefore cannot completely reinsert. Since I have had it for not even a week, will load up and return for a new one. IF this happens will find another brand. It's great for cutting my dead palm prawns. Not happy about having to start over as it is easy to assemble but now have to tear it down to fit on car. It's a lot heavier than you would think for 8lbs.

                A warning before you buy
I purchased the Ryobi Pole Saw a few years ago. It has worked well for cutting small limbs from our trees. On July 3, 2020 I went to the emergency room because of this saw. As I started trimming a limb, the plastic joint that holds the top section of saw pulled out of the larger tube. The top section, with the chain saw still going swung down hitting me in the chests, ripping into my shirt, and leaving tracks from my nipple to my stomach. Then it dropped to the top of my left arm, just above my wrist, and proceeded to chew in before I could figure out what was going on, and release the trigger. A few hours in emergency and 14 stitches later, I returned home, happy the saw didn't swing into my neck or the other side of my wrist. I can't see how the joint was connected to the pole.

Nice and reliable lightweight chain saw, easy to operate. Buyers, be aware on two issues: 1. It's ONLY pole saw, the shortest distance between the saw and trigger is ~ 5 ft. Description clearly said that. Thus, do not expect (due to the short, 8" saw) the high freedom in the orientation of saw between branches of tree because of the long pole. For the same reason, there may be a challenge to store the saw. I have used two giant hooks (for the mounting of bicycles) into the horizontal beam in the garage (see the picture). 2. When 1st time inserting hex rods into the intermediate round tube, there is the trick, which mentioned in the assembly instructions but very briefly. These hex rods have the spring-supported lock WHICH SHOULD BE MATCHED WITH TINY HOLE IN MIDDLE ROD. If hex rods are inserted wrong way (the spring buttons doesn't match these holes, which allows to push the spring with the thin metal rod), there is no way to fix the wrong position of handle with trigger and saw head. Manufacturer should put large-font attention stickers with arrows on both parts. I was lucky to accidentally insert the trigger part by right way and was able to fix the wrong alignment between the handle and saw.

Broke Within 5 months of light use
This poles saw broke after 5 months of use. The internal parts are mainly plastic. It cut well while it worked but the quality just isn't there. Unless you plan on using it very lightly & very rarely you can expect to have to buy a new one every 6 months. In my case, it was the plastic piece that keeps the blade inline that failed. Also be very careful during assembly, once snapped into place it is very difficult to correct.

                    Great for 5 minutes
If you decide to get this you need to buy 4 of them because for any decent project you will need that many to get done without stopping to replace the chain. It falls off every 5-10 cuts. If the chain would stay on it would be a great saw but I’ve never used a chainsaw where the chain comes off so easily. One time I just dropped it on the ground and the chain popped off. Crazy

Hello, Dave - We are sorry that you're having trouble with the chain coming off! The issue you're having may be related to chain stretching. (Before replacing the bar, chain, or adjusting the chain tension, stop the motor, wait for all moving parts to stop, disconnect from the power supply, and wear protective gloves.) All new chains will stretch during the first 20 minutes or so of use. So, when you are using a new chain, you will have to re-tighten the chain every 5-10 minutes or the first 20 minutes to get your chain to the right tension. This happens because new chains have not been heated up before, so when they heat up on the saw they stretch. After you get about 20 mins of use on the chain, it will not stretch or shrink, and you will only have to check the tension before starting a project. We hope this helps, but if it doesn't, then please contact our product support team at 1.800.860.4050, so they can assist you further. And thank you for the review! --reviews@ryobitools.com RYOBIOutdoorTools

Make sure to follow assembly correctly or have Home Depot help you and you'll enjoy this for all your branch trimming needs, I messed up by not lining up the holes by just simple putting together, understanding of Hand trigger and saw alignment was where i messed up when i assembled, i then fixed it by cutting an aluminum can and making my own shim to disassemble. It has Pin holes that need to be lined up in case you ever need to disassemble it. Worked great in removing a 40 foot Maple tree that was planted in wrong place in my front yard.
