Roger, the valve is designed very well. There are three reasons why it is making noise. 1. Water pressure is to high up stream of the valve, try turning down the flow control a little to reduce (restrict) the pressure. 2. Water flow is to fast. Reduce the flow by turning down the flow control a little. 3. There may be air in the the up stream supply. Make sure that the valve is installed at least 6” above the highest head down stream. If not, water can cause back pressure on the valve from down stream and the valve will not operate properly. The valve uses pressure differential to open and close. The solenoid opens to release a very small amount of water on the top side of the diaphragm. The pressure on the lower side will push the valve open. Closing is just the opposite.
Sounds like air in the line. When you open the solenoid it opens gradually, but when opened electronically its opened all at once. What is upstream of the valves? If its effecting all of the lines then its not going to be downstream of the valves. Can you have someone turn it on remotely (manual button on the controller) while you stand by the valve and see if something shakes.
My guess is they would be 18 gauge. I am unable to find anything that specifies the actual gauge, though.

Thanks for your question. If you are wanting to run this valve off-grid without an AC-powered controller, there is a battery-operated Rainbird timer line you might want to investigate. It's the Rain Bird TBOS-BT 9V Battery Controller, 1-6 station models. It's compatible with this valve and the AC solenoid is replaced with a DC-powered solenoid. Although not a standard Home Depot item, you could ask if they will special order for you (ask at the Pro desk).
It has a back flow built in. That's the black device above outflow connector.
