I plan to rent a plate compactor to finish a laid paving block driveway (15 feet by 17 feet) ; time is not an issue. But rather than rent a compactor two additional times I plan to compact the gravel and sand layers with this ten inch tamper; can it do a proper job?
Asked by: sspdavid
Yes. But temper is always better

I have to replace a slab section ~4-6” thick concrete ~25 ft2. Would this tool do the job or do i need to rent the gas power unit?

Asked by: Bob
Rent the gas power unit, this tool is more for leveling the dirt underneath before you pour your new slab.

Doing a paver patio and planning to use this to compact the dirt and then paver base. The video says to spread a thin layer of sand and run a plate compactor (the automatic one) over the pavers once they've been laid. Do I need to rent the plate compactor for this step? Will this steel one damage the concrete pavers I'm using?
Asked by: 1stTimeDIYer
Hi. Yes, this will damage your pavestone. (It's mainly for compacting dirt, sand and crushed rock). You should rent a plate compactor from Home Depot. Let them know what your using it for. I don't know for sure, but there may be different plates for the compactor.

I purchased the tamper instead of renting because potholes always seem to reoccur. A bag of asphalt patch and the tamper did a great job patching the pothole. My wrist and finger joints ached after tamping - something that I did not anticipate. This manual tamper works only if the drop is perfect - the bottom plate hits the asphalt evenly on all sides - else the resulting feedback to the handle is painful and no compacting of the asphalt happens. But eventually enough good tamps happen and the job gets done.

I have owned one of these for more than 2 years for use around my wife's flower gardens. It's a bit too heavy for her to easily use it, but it's size and weight works well for me. The pad and handle size and weight seem to be well designed for its purpose. It meets my expectations. As an aside, I discovered that an owl used to keep birds off porch and patio furniture fits the handle of this unit, so I recently bought a second tamper!

The quality of the tamper is good with solid construction, however I have to give it a one star rating because it is not 57 inches in height as listed in the product specifications. It is only 46 inches high. For most people this will not be an issue but I have to have a tamper with a longer handle which is why I selected this specific model.

You should paint it green, acquire character usage rights from Marvel Comics, and rename it "Hulk Smash Tamper." Professional landscapers and hardscapers may or may not be impressed, but just imagine all the dad weekend warriors showing off their new tamper.

It reduced vibration considerably. The weight of the tamper is good. It's enough to get the job done. I used it for tamping asphalt in potholes. I'm quite satisfied with the outcome of the job for which I used the tamper for.

It does what it's supposed to do, which is pretty simple, but a lot of work. A machine compactor wouldn't fit in my car. My only gripe is that the soil would stick to it, but that's probably because we used it on topsoil. Would probably work better on sand.

I was going to rent on but the place I called had no idea what I was talking about. This was inexpensive enough so I bought it. I’m sure I’ll use it again one day.
