Can I use a driver or do I need a hammer drill with these screws?

If you are just attaching the Cement Board to a wooden subfloor then a screw shooter will do fine. You will need to adjust the depth to just slightly countersink the screw heads. If you don't do that the screw can easily bore right through the board and will crack it if you are too close to an edge. I think that the recommendation is not getting closer than three inched from an edge. Now if you are attaching this to a concrete floor, you will need to pre-drill with a small masonry bit. That might take a little practice to determine the drill size and depth.

1-1/4" ok for 1/2" Durock on walls?

Unless local code says otherwise, if you spaced them properly you should be fine. The thread on these screws hold very well. I would not replace. If code requires, you could buy another box and add to the existing sheets.

Hi Ben. The Rock-On cement board screws will not be able to screw directly into brick. They are designed for attaching cement board to wood or light gauge metal studs (20-26Ga.). One solution is securing furring strips to the brick with a flat-head Tapcon anchor, then using Rock-On screws to attach the board to the furring strips. Please reference the cement board manufacturers instructions to ensure you maintain their warranty. They may have other solutions available as well.

Rock-On #9 x 1-1/4 in. Serrated Head Star Drive Cement Board Screws have threads similar to drywall screws and should penetrate metal studs just fine. To make sure try screwing one into a metal stud to see how easily it self drills into the metal. Good luck with your project.

This product was perfect for my remodeling job, which included tearing out the old backboard and installing new backboard in my shower room. The product was easy to use, well-suited to the purpose, and reasonably priced. Thanks to my local Home Depot staff, I had the right tools and supplies to do my job.

These are excellent cement board screws that were used by my contractor when remodeling our bathroom. A little detail like having a serrated head that seats flush with the board, made the task go by quick and easy. These were 1 1/4 “ and worked really good. The packaging was also nicely designed so you could get the screws out with the lid still attatched in case they get knocked over. I also used the remainder for other misc. projects and the shape of the screws added a cool look to them. It also includes a T-25 bit that you can keep in the box for future use.

I used/would use this product for horizontal use only. like floors. I like the flush mount when using it on rock board as there are less holes to fill. [Providing you use the correct drill speed] I did not like them on the vertical surface as they do not grab as easy the other type. See pictures. If you are fumbling around trying to make it grab on a 90 degree angle, it can slow you down. The star is a plus. And the value is the best compared to similar products.
