Not sure but they are not wood. They are lighter than solid wood.

It was like 11 7/8 in. So pretty darn close.

Can these boards be attached with a nail and hammer?

Do you mean nail the shelf into a bracket? You need something to attach the shelf to the wall. But don't use nails because this isn't wood. It's light particle board with thin flimsy laminate with a printed fake wood pattern. Hammering a nail would crumble this to dust.

May these boards be cut? Will the coating on the outside of the boards split?

I cut it and the laminate splintered, but I didn't set my saw to delicate. You might have better luck. Just make sure you use painter's tape to hold the laminate together where you cut. Good luck. Caulk afterward to prevent splinters.

This is actually much lighter in real life. The Magnolia is off white. I agree, they should have a birch color.

What's the weight capacity of this shelf?

Weight capacity is not up to the shelf as much as the support. the fiberboard would not compress under a weight that you could lift an item without a machine. these boards would NOT be good with heavy usage of constant impact or as flooring! Humid areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, sheds, attics or garages would swell and degrade these shelves over time. Tips for weight bearing shelves are to never use sheetrock supported brackets but only into studs with any decent length screw not nail. using any typical shelving bracket into studs, supporting every 16 inches (where studs are spaced) and only having a 1 foot lever arm for supported wall shelves you will be able to support any items that fit on the shelf. this will change if you only use 2 brackets over a wide area instead of every 16 inches as the shelf may sag in the midsection and break with a heavy item. this will also fail if you use very small screws or screw into sheetrock anchors (even if shelf works great at first, sheetrock will pop and sag over time) structrual engineering would claim that graded hardware is needed, but 3 #8 deck screws 2to3 inches long with a washer if needed in each support would be able to hold a 1 foot concrete block between every 2 16 inch spaced supports for several years and never fail unless getting wet or impacted. the fiberboard shelf corners may fail over time if you have a very heavy item on the unsupported overhang in a humid or fluctuating temperature area (shed)

This is a CAUTIOUS "Yes, will recommend." The laminate is very thin and scratches easily. I'm using this as a cat perch on a window sill, so there's a thin blanket protecting it. I'm pretty sure this will scrape up and look like crap fast if used as intended.

Bought to add a shelf in the camper kitchen above counter cabinet. Picked this one as the color is a close match to the inside walls of the camper. Cut it down to the right length. Have not done the install yet but it should give us the "extra" storage needed in the right place.

I actually bought it to add to a 3 shelve unit, made it a 5 shelve unit. Blends in with my existing shelf, color wise. I asked the lumber department to cut it into 2 other shelves, and a scrap piece. It cut really well with their electric saw.

Looks nice in my closet. Would have preferred 3/4” thickness rather than 5/8”, but it looks good.
